What happened to Swoop?

Launched in 2018, Swoop Airlines in Canada was a low-cost carrier that operated under parent company WestJet. Based at Hamilton International Airport (YHM) and later at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Swoop operated direct routes throughout Canada as well as to the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States.

While WestJet launched Swoop to enter the ultra-low-cost carrier market, it shut down Swoop's operations in October 2023 and absorbed it into the broader WestJet fleet and network. Although the budget model was successful, the 2023 new collective agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) negotiated the merger to ensure fair compensation for pilots across both airlines.

What replaced Swoop?

Instead of offering ultra-affordable travel options through Swoop's 16 aircraft, WestJet plans to transition to low-cost fares across its 180-aircraft fleet. Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet Group CEO, stated, "As we conclude this integration, we will learn from Swoop’s successes to best serve our guests with diversified product offerings that meet a variety of needs."

WestJet flights in Canada now offer the UltraBasic fare, a no-frills tier similar to Swoop fares. Here's what you can expect from an UltraBasic fare:

• Only one personal item that must fit under the seat.

• Carry-on bags are permitted only on long-haul flights to Europe and Asia.

• Passengers can check bags for extra fees.

• No changes or cancellations—fares are nonrefundable (unless made within 24 hours of booking).

• Fares are not eligible for WestJet Rewards earning or spending.

• No Silver, Platinum, or Gold benefits.

Since Swoop was an all-around budget airline, seating wasn't specific to fares. On WestJet UltraBasic, passengers are seated in the newly densified rear of the aircraft, but they still get the overall WestJet economy cabin experience.

Like all other Economy guests, UltraBasic passengers may choose to upgrade to WestJet's Extended Comfort up until check-in. Ranging from $20 to $400, Extended Comfort fees unlock access to benefits like extra legroom, priority boarding, priority security, and a complimentary beverage (depending on the specific flight).
