What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport

Madrid Airport has four terminals.  Terminal 1, 2 and 3 are all part of the same complex, while the new Terminal 4 is far from the other three.  Although Terminal 4 is connected to the other three via the city's metro system, it is preferable to use the airport shuttle service to avoid an unnecessary €3 airport departure fee.  Madrid Airport is connected to the city via municipal metro, regional train, express bus and taxi.  In general, the trip takes approximately thirty minutes and all transportation options are well-signed in English and Spanish.

Airport Facilities

The Madrid Airport has all of the expected comforts of a major airport, including ATMs, currency exchange offices, car rental services, left luggage storage and value-added tax (VAT) refund providers.  Wireless internet and free computer access points are available throughout all four terminals.  Of course, there is also excellent shopping (including famous Spanish brands like Zara and Carolina Herrera) and a range of Spanish and international dining choices.

What to See and Do in Madrid

As one of the most Instagrammable cities in the world, Madrid seems to hold a surprise around every corner.  Most visitors like to stay close to one of the two major plazas in the city centre: Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol.  From here, many of the city's most famous attractions are within walking distance, including Palacio Real, the Prado Museum and Parque del Retiro.  To experience true Spanish culture, it is recommended that travelers take in a flamenco performance, a Real Madrid soccer game, and a dinner of world-famous Spanish wine and tapas.
