Getting to Bilbao Airport
Bilbao Airport (BIO) is a large airport that serves northern Spain and Basque Country. It is a focus city for Iberia Regional and Vueling, but also offers flights from international carriers like Air France, easyJet, and KLM.
There are no direct flights from Canada to Bilbao, Spain available at this time. To get there, you'll have to take a layover in a major European city like London (LHR), Paris (CDG), or Amsterdam (AMS).
Canadians can travel to Spain for up to 90 days without a visa. However, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past your expected date of departure, and you may be asked to provide proof of a return flight home.
The Best Time To Visit Bilbao
The best time to visit Bilbao and the Basque Country is during the summer, when there is less rain and the average temperature stays around 25 degrees Celsius. If you plan on exploring the countryside around the city, try to shoot for a late September-mid October visit - you'll find the cheapest hotels and beautiful photo opportunities in the vineyards!
What to Do in Bilbao
Bilbao is a port city with an industrial feel and massive skyscrapers downtown. Its riverside views are not to be underestimated! As an added bonus, Bilbao has the fewest cars per capita in Spain, so traffic is almost non-existant and it's easy to get from place to place on foot. You could spend days exploring Bilbao's plethora of art galleries, or explore the outer streets with gorgeous Basque architecture. Just outside of the city, Basque Country features many beautiful vineyards and landscapes that will take your breath away. Here are a few of Bilbao's most famous spots to visit:
- The Museo Guggenheim Bilbao is by far Bilbao's most iconic building. Built in 1997 and designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, this museum is a spectacle of modern and contemporary art. Its unique shape and ultra-shiny titanium exterior make it hard to miss.
- Basilica de Begona is a 16th-century Gothic church that took over 100 years to complete. Inside, you'll find a golden altar with a statue of the Virgin Begona, the patron saint of Biscay.
- Las Siete Calles (the seven sisters) is the area of Bilbao's old town where the original 7 streets of the city were constructed in the 1400s. Originally, they were the city's commercial centre, but now they are filled with quaint cafes, lively bars, world-class restaurants, and boutiques.
