What to Expect at Deer Lake Airport
Roughly 58 kilometres from the town of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, the Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF), is the second busiest airport in the province. Most carriers provide service from eastern and central Canada. Examples are Air Canada Rouge and WestJet, both connecting Deer Lake with Toronto-Pierson. Smaller planes, such as those used by Air Canada Express, Provincial Airlines, and WestJet Encore mainly cover areas throughout Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Sunwing Airlines also has seasonal service from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and Varadero, Cuba.
International and domestic flight arrivals are on one side of the single terminal, while departure lounges and gates are in the middle. Ticketing desks are next to the departure lounges. A passenger lounge, restaurant, ATM, sundry store and internet café are all available. Wi-Fi is free.
Car rental desks are lined up next to baggage claim. This is a rural area and a car is the best way to get around, especially if you want to really explore Deer Lake and the surrounding area. Consider getting a 4x4, especially if travelling in winter. Shuttles and taxis are also available, usually standing by when flights are due in. Cost of a shuttle to Corner Brook is $22.00 CAD per person. Taxis are metered, so it all comes down to distance and time.
What to See and Do In and Around Deer Lake, Newfoundland
- Gros Morne National Park is made up of some of the most ancient rock on the planet. Shaped by glaciers and the relentless shifting of the continental plates, you'll find sculptured mountains, deep fjords and "sea stacks" decorating the beaches. Sea stacks are mostly limestone cliffs that were eaten away by wind and rain erosion, creating unusual, towering shapes. Hike through parts of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and you might think you're exploring the moon, or another planet. You'll also find tundra and alpine forests hosting wildlife such as moose, caribou and the Arctic hare. Guided hikes are available from the middle of June through September, a wise move if you don't know the area. An Explora app is available for your phone if you're comfortable spending time alone in the wilderness. The park is only 35 kilometres from the airport.
- The town of Deer Lake is six kilometres from the airport. It's mostly known as a recreational area. Deer Lake Beach is on a freshwater lake that was carved out by glaciers and is perfect for a good stretch of the legs. Stop by the Newfoundland Insectarium for a close up look at the creepy and the crawly. You'll also find lovely butterflies flitting about. Go horseback riding at Cache Rapids Stable or play a round of golf at the Humber River Golf Club. It's a quiet nine-hole set up amid the forest along the Humber River. Be prepared for some unusual golf hazards, such as moose or deer munching away at the greenery. Dates for this seasonal course are largely governed by weather but it usually opens by late May or early June.
- Corner Brook is the largest city near the Deer Lake Airport and where you'll find most of the accommodations. It's a preferred base for those wanting to ski or snowboard at nearby Marble Mountain or cross-country skiers challenging the Corner Brook Stream Trail. The trail is also great for hiking in the warmer seasons. Captain James Cook made his mark here in 1762 and there's a life-size bronze statue dedicated to the man. It's a bit of a hike to get to the statue's platform, but the reward is a panoramic view of Corner Brook and the ocean beyond.
