Arriving at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport
Tehran-IKIA is an enormous, modern single-terminal airport located just 30 km southwest of Tehran. IKIA is one of two commercial airports serving Tehran and the busiest International option to Iran. Since opening in 2004, IKIA has averaged 6.5 million passengers per year exceeding 8 million in 2016. The airport contains a Wi-Fi lounge, three banks and various ATM machines (for local bank customers only), food concessions, shopping vendors, prayer rooms, multiple lounges, and Europcar rentals.
Iranian Rial is the currency used throughout the nation, and CAD is easily exchanged at the airport. IKIA is considered by many to be a "sleeping airport", but extended visitors should definitely arrange hotel accommodations. Transportation to the city is only available via taxi or rental car. Taxi prices are dependent on the car chosen, but they range between 700,000 - 750,000 IRR ($29-$31 CAD). Once inside Tehran, the metro system is a cheaper, safer, and more comfortable transportation alternative.
