Zurich Airport, or Flughafen Zürich in German, is the largest international airport in Switzerland. Since the airport is located in Kloten municipality of the canton of Zürich, it's also known as Kloten Airport. It serves Zürich, the largest city of Switzerland, and is eight miles from the city centre of Zürich.
Zürich Airport has two terminals, known as terminals A and B. Both of the terminal buildings have three levels (zero, one, and two). The terminal buildings are close together and are interconnected at all the three levels. Arrivals at both of the terminals are on the ground floor (level zero).
Amenities at Zürich Airport include baggage lockers, currency exchange centres, food and drink facilities, medical care, and duty-free stores. There are information desks located at the arrival points.
Finding a Rental Car at Zürich Airport
Car rental is a convenient way of making transfers from Zürich Airport. The car rental area located on level one of the terminal complex is open from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Visitors can book a car from a number of car rental companies, including Alamo, Dollar Thrifty, Avis, Enterprise, Budget, Europcar, National, Hertz, Sixt, and FlughafenZürich.
The car return area is at Parking 3 (P3). While returning the rented car, visitors can follow the P3 sign as they approach the Zürich airport.
Driving Around the Airport
Zurich Airport is close to five different municipalities including Rumlang, Oberglatt, Winkel, Kloten, and Opfikon, which surround the airport in all directions. Driving to the city of Zürich takes about 25 minutes from the airport.
There are a number of BP, Shell, Socar, and Migrol petrol stations around the airport. One BP petrol station is located right inside the airport premises.
The A51 motorway outside the airport is the main road leading towards Zürich. It also links to the A1 highway that runs across Switzerland from east to west. Swiss toll roads require drivers to buy a vignette sticker and display it on their vehicle. However, most car rental companies already have a vignette on their cars, and visitors don't need to buy it separately. Still, it's better to confirm this while hiring a car.
