Discover Aleppo
Aleppo, at this time, is not a place you should even consider visiting. The Syrian Civil War continues to rage and Aleppo, along with the rest of the country, remains extremely dangerous. While the Battle of Aleppo ended at the end of 2016 and saw the government regain control of the city, Aleppo is nonetheless nowhere close to being a place that you should be visiting. Residents of Aleppo are only just starting to return to the city and making the first steps towards rebuilding. The city was one of the worst affected by the war and basic services, including security, cannot be guaranteed.
The Aleppo International Airport is also still without regularly scheduled flights. While the airport has technically recently reopened with some unscheduled government flights, it is not clear when passenger service will be brought back. The airport is officially a secondary hub of Syrian Air, which once offered flights to Damascus and Moscow, but that service has long been suspended.
The situation in Aleppo is particularly tragic given that this city was once considered one of the most beautiful and friendliest in the Middle East. Aleppo is one of the world's oldest cities and its historic city centre, including the monumental citadel and its covered souqs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sadly, the historic centre was the scene of heavy fighting during the Battle of Aleppo and its status as a World Heritage Site is in danger. Many of the city's greatest works of architecture and culture lay in ruins and it is as yet unclear if they will ever be rebuilt to their former glory. While fighting in the city itself has ended, the Syrian Civil War is still ongoing and the situation remain volatile and dangerous.
