Flights from Ottawa International

Welcome to Canada’s political heart, a neighborhood that includes the twin cities of Ottawa-Hull. Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (YOW), or L'aéroport international Macdonald-Cartier, is the main international airport serving Canada’s capital city. The business and residences here straddle the border of two provinces, Ontario and Quebec, and thus the region and city are entirely bilingual. That includes traffic signs, financial institutions, most retail outlets, and naturally the city’s international airport. The busy airspace above Ottawa is part of what is known as the Eastern Triangle, the other two points being Montreal and Toronto.

Other Local Airports

In order to accommodate the many political employees, commuters, residents, and tourists that move through this area, several airports call this region home. Any connecting flight you have with YOO might involve a transfer or stop at any of the following airports.

  • Ogdensburg Airport (OGS)
  • Massena International Airport (MSS)
  • Watertown International Airport (ART)

All of these airports are less than 100km away from Ottawa, but they are on the US side of the border in New York State. Make sure you have the necessary documentation to cross the border and get through customs.

Transportation to and from Macdonald–Cartier International Airport

The OC Transpo links the airport to its comprehensive transportation hub through route 97, which can take you downtown or to a number of other destinations through its bus, tram, or rail network. Drivers can approach from downtown via Route 79 or 31 coming off TransCanada 416.

Cheap Flights to Macdonald–Cartier International Airport

Inexpensive travel through this region is about timing. Holidays like Christmas and festivals like Winterlude can make finding cheap fares difficult, and YOW is a relatively small airport compared to YYZ and YUL. Most of the long haul flights that leave from this airport stay within Canada or fly to seasonal snowbird destinations, like Mexico or the southern United States. href="">Air Canada and href="">Westjet fly both regular commuter flights and seasonal vacation routes, and they share the concourse with holiday airlines like SunWing and Air Transat.

See What's Beyond the Macdonald–Cartier International Airport

The name of the airport recognizes two of Canada’s founders, Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier. MacDonald was the country’s first Prime Minister and Cartier helped to draft Confederation, not to be confused with the other famous Canadian Cartier who explored much of the St. Lawrence Seaway and founded the Colony of New France in what is now Montreal. That gives you an idea of the history there is in this region. There are various cultural and seasonal events to see depending on when you visit, and the availability of transportation make this convenient and inexpensive to experience.

Easy Searching

Know what to expect when looking for flights that connect, leave, or arrive at YOW. The airport’s tenants are equally divided between a few big international players and a number of smaller, regional airlines serving isolated Northern communities and locations in the Arctic. Your vacation package with Air Canada, Air Transat, or Westjet can move through this airport as easily as your weekly commuter flight between the capital region and your cottage in Muskoka.
