Flying out of Toronto Pearson International Airport

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is easily Canada’s busiest airport. The airport serves over forty million passengers per year, flying worldwide on dozens of different airlines. Though the airport only consists of two terminals, YYZ is also the largest Canadian airport in size. Terminal 1 handles the majority of all domestic and international flights. Terminal 3 is used by a small handful of airlines, including Air Transat.

You will be able to fly direct from Toronto to Barcelona using two airlines: Air Canada and Air Transat. Toronto Pearson is also a hub for Air Canada. Many other airlines fly this route with one layover, including United Airlines, TAP Portugal and Lufthansa. United usually stops in either Washington or New Jersey, TAP Portugal usually stops in Lisbon and Lufthansa usually stops in Frankfurt.

You will need to bring your valid Canadian passport to fly from Toronto to Barcelona. For tourist visits up to 90 days, you will not need to obtain a visa.

Barcelona-El Prat Airport Information

Barcelona’s main airport is Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), known informally as Barcelona Airport. This airport is also the second busiest airport in all of Spain. It is located about 12 km from Barcelona’s city center and consists of two terminals. If you fly direct via Air Canada, you will fly into Terminal 1. Air Transat uses Terminal 2, along with many other low-cost carriers.

BCN’s two terminals sit approximately 4 km apart, but there is a free shuttle bus that connects the two. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes or less, depending on the time of day. However, as both terminals are well-equipped with many transportation links, you will really only need to change terminals if you are catching a connecting flight. If you want to use public transportation, there are metro and bus stops at each terminal. Taxis are also always available outside of arrivals. There are six car rental companies with counters at the airport, including Enterprise and Hertz.

What to Expect in Barcelona

Barcelona is six hours ahead of Toronto, so you will experience a significant time shift. Before your flight, be sure to review some tips on handling jet lag. Both cities are very popular with tourists, so average prices for meals and entertainment are on the high side. However, Barcelona’s prices are generally slightly lower than those in Toronto.

Visiting Barcelona in the winter is a great idea for Canadians. Whereas Toronto experiences significant cold, ice and snow, Barcelona’s winters are generally mild. The summers in Barcelona are hotter and more humid than those in Toronto. Many tourists enjoy visiting Barcelona in the late spring (April to June) and in the fall (September to October). During these periods, the daytime temperatures are generally mild and pleasant and the nights are cool and refreshing.
