Flying out of Ottawa International Airport
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW), informally known as Ottawa International Airport, is located about 10 km from downtown Ottawa. The airport has one terminal with three levels. Upon arrival, you will go through security on level two. Level three has check-in counters and the food court. Level one is reserved for arrivals. Throughout the terminal, you will see sculptures, paintings and other art pieces all created by Canadian artists.
Porter Airlines is the only airline offering direct flights from Ottawa to Toronto Island Airport. Air Canada also flies this route with one stop at Montreal's YUL Airport. Domestic passengers should arrive at least two hours before flight departure.
A valid Canadian passport is the easiest form of identification to show, but you do not necessarily need one to fly. You may be able to use another ID, provided it has a photograph and displays your name, date of birth and gender. It must also be government-issued. Before your flight, double-check with your airline to ensure you bring the right identification. You also won't need to obtain travel insurance if you are covered under OHIP.
Toronto Island Airport Information
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), known informally as Toronto Island Airport, is located offshore on Toronto Island. There is one passenger terminal, connected to the shore by a passenger walkway. There is also a quick, free ferry available to make the trip to the mainland. Once you're safely on shore, you'll be just minutes from downtown Toronto.
Hertz and Enterprise car rental counters are conveniently located right on the island at arrivals. You can pick up and drop off your rental directly from the island terminal. However, taking a car on the ferry will cost $11 CAD for a return trip ticket. If you want to avoid this, car rental companies also operate on the mainland. At the airport's mainland terminal, there is also a complimentary shuttle bus stop. The shuttle makes one stop at York Street and Front Street, across the street from downtown Toronto's Union Station. Also on the mainland, you'll find public transportation busses, subway stops and taxis.
