Previously known as SATA Internacional, Azores Airlines is a subsidiary of SATA Air Açores based in the beautiful Atlantic archipelago of the Azores. The Azores is an autonomous region of Portugal consisting of nine volcanic islands which lie 1,360 km to the west of continental Portugal. The largest city on the largest of these islands, Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island, serves as the headquarters of Azores Airlines. The airline also has operational bases in Lisbon, Boston, and Toronto.
SATA Air Açores covers domestic destinations within the Azores, while Azores Airlines operates both scheduled and chartered flights to the Madeira Islands, mainland Portugal, other European destinations, and many North American destinations. Outside of Portugal, Azores Airlines flies into the European cities of Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Stockholm. It offers trans-Atlantic flights for travellers from Boston, Oakland, and Providence in the United States, and from Toronto and Montreal in Canada. For an affordable price, Azores Airlines can whisk you away to go on a heart-pounding hiking adventure in the Azores or to enjoy March break in Portugal.
A Brief History of Azores Airlines
Azores Airlines, known at the time as OceanAir, began operations in the early 1990s with charter flights between the Madeira archipelago and mainland Europe. SATA Air Açores became the owner of OceanAir in 1995 and continued the airline’s charter operations. Between 1995 and 1998, OceanAir expanded operations and took over service between the Azores and mainland Portugal from the public sector. In 1998, OceanAir was officially rebranded as SATA Internacional.
1998 also marked the year that SATA Internacional received its air operator certificate, which allowed the airline to begin operating international routes to and from the Azores archipelago. The next year, SATA Internacional won a bid for the operation of public service routes between Lisbon and Ponta Delgada, and between Porto and Funchal. The airline continued to grow at a steady pace over the following years and, in October 2015, announced both a fleet renewal and a major rebranding accompanied by a name change. From this point on, SATA Internacional has been known as Azores Airlines.
Azores Airlines Fleet
The current Azores Airlines fleet consists of seven total aircraft: three Airbus A320 models, three Airbus A310 models, and one Airbus A330, which has the largest seating capacity at 283 seats. The airline is currently working on upgrading its fleet with newer Airbus models which have increased seating capacities over their current fleet. Though still a relatively small carrier, Azores Airlines is no doubt looking towards growing and expanding in the future. Even with its current fleet, it is the premier airline for Canadians wishing to discover Portugal and the Azores.

Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Miles promotions
Frequent fliers with Azores Airlines can reap ample benefits through the SATA IMAGINE loyalty program. SATA IMAGINE members are eligible to earn miles which can then be put towards free flight tickets and other rewards. There are four tiers to the SATA IMAGINE program, each represented by a different card.
The Bluesky card allows members to exchange their miles for tickets and for upgrades to SATA Plus Class. Cardholders also benefit from blue-level priority when waitlisted and from special conditions when using SATA IMAGINE partner benefits.
Members who attain 25 status miles or who complete 100 one way flights within a 24 month period are upgraded to the Silversky card. Silversky comes with all of the benefits of Bluesky membership, plus Executive Class check-in and higher waitlist priority.
The Goldsky tier upgrade requires members to achieve 70 status miles or 200 one-way flights. Along with all of the benefits of Silversky, Goldsky members receive access to all airport lounges and a higher baggage allowance.
A Trade membership is reserved for tourism sector professionals. It provides most of the same benefits of a Goldsky membership but with 40% bonus miles versus the 30% offered by Goldsky.
SATA members can also take advantage of limited time offers as communicated through the SATA and Azores Airlines websites.
How to Check In, Seating Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
Passengers flying with Azores Airlines have the option of checking in at the airport or of using web/mobile check-in if flying out of certain airports. Web/mobile check-in is available out of the Azores, Madeira, Lisbon, Porto, Boston, Toronto, Frankfurt, Las Palmas, London, Barcelona, and Cape Verde.
Web/mobile check-in for Azores Airlines can be done as early as 48 hours before the scheduled time of departure at most airports but only 24 hours before the time of departure when flying to or from destinations in the United States and Canada.
Passengers who have the option to check in online also have the option of choosing their seat at that time. Choosing a regular seat comes with no extra charge but, if you prefer, you can pay a fee in order to choose a more spacious seat in the first row or by an emergency exit.
During web/mobile check-in you will also have the option of printing your boarding pass unless you have requested special services, are travelling on a student, resident, or connecting fare, or are travelling to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, or Cape Verde. If you are not able to print your boarding pass ahead of time, then you can simply obtain one from the Azores Airlines check-in counter at the airport.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Azores Airlines allows one piece of carry-on baggage weighing up to 8 kg and measuring 55x40x20 cm for economy class passengers. Executive class passengers are allowed two pieces of carry-on baggage weighing up to a combined total of 20 kg (with no more than 10 kg and a measurement of 56x45x25 cm per bag). Free hand baggage articles, which can be brought on board free of charge, include: a coat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a camera, books and magazines, a laptop bag, and a small handbag.
Passengers flying economy class on all routes are also entitled to check one free bag weighing up to 23 kg. Weight allowances on certain routes are higher for passengers with economy smart, economy value, and executive tickets. When flying on routes to and from the United States and Canada, executive and economy value passengers may check up to two bags.
Azores Airlines charges additional baggage fees for baggage which exceeds allowable weight or volume limits.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
The planes in Azores Airlines’ fleet come with onboard entertainment systems that you can enjoy during the flight. Meals are provided on longer flights, and the airline will also try to meet special meal requests as long as information is provided at the time of booking or up to 24 hours before departure. The availability of special meal requests, however, will depend on the departure airport.
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service guidelines
On Azores Airlines, each passenger over 15 years of age is allowed to carry one baby that is younger than two years of age free of charge. However, you will have to be seated in rows that have available supplementary oxygen masks. Children (two – 11 years) receive a discounted fare when flying with Azores Airlines.
Azores Airlines provides unaccompanied minor assistance service for children who are travelling alone for an extra fee. The service is required for children five to 11 years of age and may also be requested by parents and guardians for children 12 to 17 years of age. Children who receive this service will be accompanied from the point of check-in to the person who will be receiving them at arrival.
Azores Airlines allows you to bring your furry companion along for the flight as long as you follow some simple transport rules. Smaller pets that comfortably fit into a proper 55x40x20 cm or smaller carrier can be carried into the cabin. Containers must remain on the floor and the animal must remain in the container for the entirety of the flight. For safety and comfort, Azores Airlines recommends that animals travel with the window seat.
Animals that are too large to fly in the cabin must be transported in the aircraft’s cargo compartment in a safe and rigid container with maximum dimensions of 100x78x69 cm. Transportation of an animal in the cargo compartment is included in the Azores Airlines baggage allowance. However, if you are going to be exceeding your free baggage allowance, then you will be charged an extra fee.
