Planning a trip from London Gatwick International Airport (LGW) to Montreal, Quebec, Canada? Best Time to Book a Flight to Montreal
Montreal is a popular destination during the winter months, not only because of the many ski resorts nearby, but because of the many family-friendly festivals. That means flights between December and March tend to be more expensive and sell out quickly. Summer festivals also bring the crowds. Mid-week flights tend to be less expensive, but it all comes down to availability. Airlines only sell so many tickets at the lowest rates. Using the Skyscanner Whole Month Search feature lets you see available prices for an entire month. Being a bit flexible on your dates and booking early can save you money.
Airlines That Fly from London Gatwick to Montreal
Air Transat is the only carrier flying non-stop from London Gatwick to Montreal. Non-stops from London-Gatwick depart on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with returning flights from Montreal on Mondays and Fridays. These options give you not only the shortest flying time but usually the lowest rates. One-stop flights are also available on Air Transat during the rest of the week. Air Transat departs from the South Terminal at London Gatwick. Some of the other airlines on this route with one-stop service, and usually the lower rates, include WestJet, WOW Air and Air Canada. Since this is an international flight, be sure to arrive at London Gatwick at least two hours prior to departure.
What to Expect When Arriving in Montreal
Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International has one terminal with an international arrival area on the ground floor. The arrival complex has baggage claim, customs and immigration checkpoints, ATMs, currency exchange outlets and car rental desks all in the same area. Hotel courtesy shuttles pick up from outside baggage claim, as does the 747 bus line from the airport into downtown Montreal. The fare is $10.00 CAD for a 24-hour pass. Ticket machines are on the international arrival level. Taxis operating out of Pierre Elliot charge $40.00 CAD into downtown. That rental car is an option, but driving and parking in Montreal are challenging, especially during the work week. The airport is 19 kilometres from downtown Montreal.
Airport Facilities
You'll find many of the restaurants, cafes, pubs and snack bars in Pierre Elliott's food court. Additional outlets are available in both the pre- and post-security areas. Boutique shops, confectionery and sundry stores are also available throughout the airport. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the terminal, and includes an e-book preview and purchasing service. Montreal is known for its love of the arts. The airport displays collections of photos, paintings and modern art pieces, with special attention paid to the international arrivals area.
What to Do and See in Montreal
You simply must not leave Montreal, Quebec, before trying a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's Deli. This landmark eatery has been serving these massive sandwiches (lots of mustard and pickle please) for over 80 years. Nearby is another landmark, Fairmount Bagel. A century-old family business, the company still bakes these round chewy treats in a traditional brick oven. Both Montreal specialties are perfect for a picnic in Mont Royal Park. Head to the top of the mountain for a panoramic view of the city or find a quiet bench along the man-made lake below. Visit the Montreal Museum of Art or the Musee Redpath of Natural History. Walk into Notre-Dame Basilica and gaze up at a bold blue ceiling covered with gilded gold stars. Even more architectural wonders await in Vieux-Montreal, or Old Montreal. Here you'll find the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum, a National Historic Site and birthplace of Quebec's largest city.
