Discover Oslo

With leafy parks, fascinating historic and modern architecture, and world-class museums, Oslo is a pleasant city to spend a few days in and is also a good gateway to Norway's natural wonders. Despite being Norway's capital and the third-largest city in Scandinavia, Oslo retains a bit of a small town charm and much of it is in fact covered by forest. With two international airports, Oslo is also easy to get to by air. With Skyscanner's Price Alerts you'll be able to keep on top of any seat sales to either of Oslo's airports..

Best Time to Book a Flight to Oslo

Despite being a northern city, the climate in Oslo is surprisingly mild. Summers never get too hot and winters are not too cold. In fact, there is really no bad time to visit Oslo. During the summer there are lots of festivals to enjoy and the pleasant weather makes strolling the city's scenic parks especially nice. Airports in Oslo

Oslo is served by two international airports. The largest one is Oslo Airport in Gardermoen, which is also the closest to the city centre. This airport handles most international flights and is a hub for Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Wideroe.  All of Europe's major airlines fly to this airport and you can get flights to here from cities across Europe and a few from further abroad, including New York City, Doha, Bangkok, Los Angeles, and Seoul.

Oslo's second airport is Sandefjord Airport, which is located 110 km from Oslo. This airport is primarily used by low-cost carriers,  including Norwegian Air Shuttle, Ryanair, and Wizz Air. All flights to Sandefjord arrive from other European cities.

What to Expect When Arriving

Oslo Airport at Gardermoen offers the shortest and easiest connections to Oslo itself. There are high-speed trains that will get you from the airport to Oslo Central Station in 20 minutes. Tickets can be bought from vending machines or from the ticket desk. Shuttle buses are also available, but they take 45 minutes and are generally more expensive than the train. Taxis are also available and while the fares from the airport to the city are fixed, they are still far more expensive (and the trip takes longer) than the train.

Sandefjord Airport is much further from Oslo City Centre, which makes taking a taxi economically impractical. There are shuttle buses that are scheduled to be outside the terminal building after each arriving flight. Travel time to Oslo is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. A train station is located nearby and there is a free shuttle bus to it from the airport. Travel time is similar to the buses, although trains only operate every hour outside of rush hour.

What to See and Do in Oslo

Oslo has a number of worthwhile tourist sites, including the Royal Palace, Opera House, and Oslo Cathedral. The Oslo City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year, is also worth a visit. The Munch Museum is a great place to see the works of Norway's most famous painter, Edward Munch, as is the National Gallery. The Viking Ship Museum, meanwhile, displays two of the best preserved viking ships in the world. Oslo has lots of great hotels and Skyscanner can help you find a room at the right price for your stay.
