Discover Chennai

India is the second largest country in the world with almost 1.24 billion residents, and only 7 million of those residents live in Chennai (originally known as Madras). Nonetheless, this capital city of Tamil Nadu has ranked as the 43rd most visited city worldwide. But several highly respected travel authorities put Chennai in the top 10 destination category. Chennai's quality of living is considered the best in India, and 45% of its tourists visit for its advancements in medical treatment. Although not one of India's swankiest cities, there's plenty to do in Chennai even if you're just waiting for a loved one to get the care they need or if you're caught between connections.

Landing in Chennai International Airport

Chennai International Airport (MAA) has handled Tamil Nadu and its entire metropolitan area's air travel needs since 1910. It's currently India's fourth most heavily trafficked airport and ranks as the 49th busiest airport in Asia. In 2016 alone, MAA averaged almost 18 million passengers daily. Two main terminals handle most of the daily passenger needs, while the exclusive Haj Terminal handles the special religious and cleansing needs of approximately 600 pilgrims during the Haj pilgrimage.

Main passengers can refresh and renew with a selection of restaurants, shops, newsstands, banking services, Wi-Fi, lounges, medical rooms, childcare rooms, and even a spa. MAA is approximately 7km from the city centre, and transportation options include shuttles, rail, car rentals, and taxis. Airport taxis are always the safest and most effective means of transportation to and from MAA. Aviation Express cabs have the best reputation, and they're fair at around 200 Rs ($4 CAD). Be sure to tip specialty service providers throughout India.

Things to Do in Chennai

Marina Beach, Thiruvanmiyur Beach, and Thiruvalluvar Nagar Beach curb even the deepest cravings for sand, sun, and saltwater fun. Approximately 4.5% of the city is shielded in a natural green canopy, so parks are plentiful. Ancient and modern temples, churches, and museums appeal to culture enthusiasts. Glimmering boutiques, luxurious hotels, quirky and contemporary restaurants, and even a handful of swanky clubs cater to active adults and night owls. And the entire family can explore the day away at Madras Crocodile Bank, Guindy National Park, or escape the tropical heat at VPG Snow Kingdom.

Chennai Travel Tips

While Tamil Nadu does not have a regional travel advisory, Canadians are still encouraged to exercise a high degree of caution while visiting any part of India. The country as a whole is conservative, so adapting to local customs and wearing proper attire are safe and smart decisions. Canadians require passports and visas prior to entering India. November to February are the best months weather-wise to visit Chennai as temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Avoid drinking tap water in Tamil Nadu and make sure to wash all fresh fruit and vegetables with bottled water. Keep track of bug repellent, your wallet, itinerary, and loved ones at all times to ensure everyone enjoys their Indian vacation.
