Best Time to Book a Flight to Izmir Airport

Izmir Airport is busy, welcoming flights from around the world to its two terminals. Aegean Airlines, ATA Airlines, Meraj Airlines, Onur Air and Pegasus Airlines are just some of the carriers providing year-round service. Other carriers fly to Izmir on a seasonal basis. What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport

Both the domestic and international terminals are light and airy and filled with passenger services, including Wi-Fi access, ATMs, and currency exchanges. You'll need Turkish Liras for transportation and other needs once you leave the airport. In the domestic terminal car rental desks are outside baggage claim, in the international, they are outside of customs. You'll need an international driver's license to rent a car, which is usually obtained in your home country. Driving around Izmir can be challenging, especially during the work-week.

Taxis are metered, charging a start fee of $1.10 CAD and .97 CAD per kilometre. The city centre is about 18 kilometres away, about a 30-minute drive. Public buses are also available, charging about .65 CAD for the 60-minute trip. The latter is only recommended if you don't have lots of luggage.

What to See and Do in Izmir

The port city of Izmir is the third largest population center in Turkey. Roughly half the population is under 30, effectively adding a youthful vibe to this ancient landscape. You'll find the Kemeralti Market, a local institution since the 17th century, filled with shops, cafes, artist's workshops, mosques, and synagogues. Stroll along the Kordon, the waterfront promenade that with its bicycle and walking pathways and grassy areas, is an example of the new Izmir. Cafes and bars abound, and it's a great place to catch the sunset. Head to the Agora, 4th-century ruins built by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor. The remains of this multi-level marketplace are somewhat intact, and archaeologists are still studying the site.
