What to Do in Bari
Bari is a southern Italian port city on the Adriatic Sea, complete with medieval cobblestone streets, churches, and castles. Bari's Old Town, Barivecchia, is a maze-like network of narrow alleys and stunning architecture that has to be seen to be believed. The city's most famous church, Basilica di San Nicola, was built in the 12th century and once held the remains of Saint Nicholas (also known as Father Christmas!). Today, it remains an important pilgrimage site for Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
The Murat quarter of the city, in the south, is where you'll find the city's newer architecture and shopping areas. Piazza Mercantile is the commercial heart of the city, while the area's main street is home to the historic Petruzzelli Theatre. Be sure to taste some of the region's famous cheese and regional wines while you're there!
