Discover Red Deer

Located halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, Red Deer is Alberta's third-largest city and a convenient base for exploring the province's many natural attractions. While the city itself is largely seen as little more than a rest stop on the drive between Calgary and Edmonton, that is beginning to change, with museums, parks, and nature trails making Red Deer a worthwhile destination in its own right. The Red Deer Airport is small and doesn't offer many flights, but there are plans to increase service thanks to a recent extension of the runway. You can use Skyscanner's monthly search tool to find the cheapest flights to Red Deer.

Best Time to Book a Flight to Red Deer

Alberta has something for travellers no matter what the season is. While winters can certainly be cold and snowy, cross-country skiing is especially popular around Red Deer and a drive to the Rocky Mountains will reveal some of the best downhill skiing in the country. Summer months likewise offer great recreational opportunities, including bird watching, biking, and hiking. Regardless of the time of year, finding an affordable flight to Red Deer is usually fairly easy.

Airlines that Fly to Red Deer Airport

Currently the only airline that flies to Red Deer is Air Canada Express, which offers direct flights from Calgary. The runway at the airport was recently extended, however, which will allow it to accommodate larger aircraft. Hopefully that improvement will help attract more airlines and routes in the future.

What to Expect at the Airport

Red Deer Airport is a small airport without the restaurants or other amenities one would expect at larger airports. There is a waiting area with a television and vending machines, however. Taxis are available to take you to Red Deer itself, which is located just 11 km to the north. However, the best way of getting around Red Deer and the rest of Alberta is by having your own car. While there are no rental agencies based at the airport itself, you can arrange to have a rental car booked ahead of time and the rental company will send somebody to have the car waiting for you when your flight arrives.

What to See and Do in Red Deer

Red Deer is particularly notable for the large number of athletes it produces, especially for the NHL and Winter Olympics. It should be no surprise, therefore, that the city is home to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Most of Red Deer's other attractions, however, are outside, including the Waskasoo Park system which meanders through the city and features great cross-country skiing trails in the winter and horseback riding in the summer. The Rocky Mountains, meanwhile, are about a two-hour drive west, and include the stunning Columbia Icefields. With Skyscanner's hotel search tool you can find a nice and affordable place to stay either in Red Deer or the surrounding region.
