Discover Bergen

Bergen is Norway's second largest city and serves as a gateway to the country's iconic fjords. Bergen has an illustrious history, having been the largest city in Scandinavia during the Medieval Period and afterwards one of the most important ports of the powerful Hanseatic League. Much of that history has been preserved in the city's narrow streets and colourful facades, especially in Bryggen, which is the city's old harbour and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bergen is served by Bergen Airport, which is Norway's second busiest airport and offers connections to Oslo and to other European cities. You can find the cheapest time to fly to this scenic Scandinavian destination by checking out the Whole Month search tool.

Best Time to Book a Flight to Bergen

Temperatures in Bergen are moderate all year round. During the summer months, the daily high is typically in the high teens and low 20s, while during the winter temperatures tend to only dip a couple degrees below freezing. However, while temperatures are relatively comfortable, the city does get a lot of precipitation. Rain and snow are at their heaviest between October and January, but even during the summer months you should expect at least a couple days of fog and rain during your visit. When the sun breaks through, however, residents enjoy it as much as possible and parks and cafes fill up quickly. Check out Price Alerts from Skyscanner to make sure you find the cheapest flights to Bergen at the best time of year.

Airlines that Fly to Bergen Airport

Bergen is Norway's second busiest airport (after Oslo Gardermoen) and is served by a handful of airlines from across Europe.  Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Widerøe handle the vast majority of flights to and from Bergen Airport. The route between Bergen and Oslo Gardermoen is by far the busiest and one of the most popular in Europe. Other major airlines serve cities throughout Europe, including Aegean Airlines, Icelandair, KLM, Swiss International Airlines, and Vueling. Norwegian Air Shuttle operate a seasonal flight to Providence, Rhode Island.

What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport

The airport is 20 km south of the city centre. The light rail system was recently extended to the airport and provides a quick and affordable way of getting from the terminal to Bergen itself. Shuttle buses to Bergen also leave about every 15 minutes during the day and take about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the city centre. Taxis are costly, but a convenient option. There are a number of car rental agencies located near the exit of the main terminal and renting a car is a worthwhile option if you plan to travel much outside of the city.

Airport Facilities

Bergen Airport was recently expanded with a new terminal that should help reduce congestion and line ups, which have become worst in recent years thanks to the growth of the city as a tourism destination. WiFi is offered throughout and is generally reliable and there is usually plenty of seating and electrical outlets for charging your devices. Cafes, duty-free shops, and restaurants are also available.

What to See and Do in Bergen
