Flying from the Airport at Smithers, B.C., to the City of Vancouver

Flying out of picturesque Smithers, B.C. to exciting Vancouver, you have a choice of two airlines -- Air Canada Express and Central Mountain Air (Smithers' own airline). Flying out of the airport in good weather, you're greeted with wonderful vistas of snowcapped mountains and the expanse of the large, beautiful Lake Kathlyn, and you're on your way. If you're planning a trip, here's information to keep in mind.

Flying out of Smithers Airport

Smithers is a tiny town of about 5,000. As you might expect, then, the airport isn't far from town -- it's only about 5 km north of town. Driving or a taxi will get you there, and there are both regular parking and accessible, designated parking. For a tiny airport, it does offer facilities, such as a café, vehicle rental desks and even Wi-Fi access. In general, the airport closes between 8 pm and 6:30 am. Opening times change, however, depending on flight delays. When you get to the airport, make sure that you check out the huge stuffed grizzly in its display case. It's one of the highlights of passing through this airport.

Arriving at Vancouver international Airport

Vancouver International, of course, is nothing like Smithers. It's a vast, modern airport that makes every imaginable facility available to passengers. This being an airport serving a huge metropolitan city, however, unmanageable crowds tend to be a problem. Often, you need to put up with half-hour waits getting off the plane, at the luggage carousel, on the walkways, and outside, on the sidewalk as you wait for a taxi, bus or hotel shuttle. Waits at airport shops and restaurants at rush hour can be as long as 20 minutes. The range on the menu can be narrow. As cosmopolitan as Vancouver is, for example, you don't get vegan dining options.

Vancouver airport has three sections -- domestic, US transborder and international -- and you can easily move among these areas. There's a lot to do at the airport. There are two award-winning aquariums, for instance, and a great deal of native artwork. If you're hoping to stretch out at the airport, rather than get a hotel room, there is plenty of bench seating. There's even a quiet area so you can sleep better. However, airport security does patrol every area and ask sleepers to show ID and tickets. If you want a hotel, however, there are plenty nearby. Using Skyscanner can help you snag a great deal.

There are showers, baby care facilities, nurseries, children's play areas dry cleaners and dental services. If you need any help around the airport, green-vested airport volunteers may be able to help you.

Alternatives are plentiful in the transportation area. There are several bus services, and hotel shuttles. An inter-terminal shuttle takes you to the South terminal, there are taxis, and there is a Canada Line train that takes you to the city in about 20 minutes. If you'd like to rent a car, it could prove to be very useful getting around the city. There are great options available on Skyscanner.
