Planning a trip from Calgary to Nanaimo

If you're planning a flight from the city of Calgary to Nanaimo, you have your choice of two different airlines -- WestJet and Air Canada, both flying out of Calgary International Airport. While Calgary does have other airports close by, they aren't used for scheduled commercial flights.

Flying out of Calgary International

Calgary International is a large, modern airport that's recently received a $2 billion remodel. About 11 miles northeast of the center of the city, the airport is easily reached both by public transportation and by car. If you're willing to take a public bus, it costs you $8. Route 300 does the 30-minute route from 5 am to midnight each day. There's another bus, Route 100, that does the route from McKnight Station the McKnight train station to the airport in about the same amount of time. The bus takes you to Arrivals, Level I, close to gate C.

If you're leaving from the downtown area, there is a hotel shuttle called the Calgary Allied Airport Shuttle that runs at a 30-minute frequency from 8 a.m. to midnight each day. The $15 ticket can be bought online . The bus stops at nearly every major hotel.

There is a regular taxi service that costs $45, and Associated Cabs runs a wheelchair-accessible on demand service, as well.

Calgary airport itself is large and modern, but it's still new, with some organizational problems. It's a good idea to go well in advance of your flight, as the airport is short of staff. Queues can be long, signage can be poor, wheelchair assistance can be nonexistent and walks to terminals in other parts of the airport can take very long as moving walkways tend to be unreliable. While there are shopping outlets, food courts and bathrooms, they tend to not be reliably open.

Arriving at Nanaimo Airport

The Nanaimo-Collishaw Air Terminal is 13 km southeast of the city. This airport is served by WestJet and Air Canada, as well. Being a small airport serving small city, Ninaimo airport offers limited services. Baggage claim is quick, however, and there is free Wi-Fi available. If you hoping to spend the night at the airport, or any length of time, you probably will not be able to do it - there is little appropriate seating available. It does have car rentals, ATMs and mobile charging stations, however.

Metered taxis and hotel shuttle buses serve the airport, and there is the Nanaimo Airport Shuttle that offers a shared ride service whenever there is a flight incoming. There is a Greyhound bus service once a day, as well.
