Flying out of Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport
Whitehorse's sole airport is Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (YXY), an airport that is operated by the Government of Yukon. Air North, a Yukon airline, offers infrequent direct flights from Whitehorse to Calgary, as well as flights with one layover (usually in Edmonton or Vancouver). Other airlines that fly with one stop include Air Canada Express and WestJet.
Domestic passengers should arrive at YXY no later than 90 minutes prior to flight departure. The airport's relatively small size makes it easy to navigate. Usually, Canadian citizens do not need to have a passport to board a domestic flight, but you will need some form of government-issued photo ID that includes your name, date of birth and gender. Once your flight is booked, it's a good idea to double-check directly with your airline as to what identification they require.
Calgary International Airport Information
Alberta's busiest airport is Calgary International Airport (YYC), located about 17km from downtown Calgary. You will fly into the domestic terminal which consists of three Concourses with 65 gates between them. If you are in Calgary for a connecting flight, the Connections Corridor allows you to switch between concourses and terminals.
For transportation, you can catch a taxi or limousine, take a public transportation bus, or rent a car from one of eight on-airport car rental companies. There is also an airport shuttle bus that picks up outside of arrivals every half hour. The shuttle costs $15 and drops off at different hotels and other spots in downtown Calgary.
What to Expect in Calgary
Calgary is only one hour ahead of Whitehorse, so jet lag will not be an issue. Since Whitehorse is so far north, grocery and restaurant prices can be pricey. Generally, you will pay less for food and entertainment in Calgary than in Whitehorse.
Though Calgary experiences cold winters, the winters in Whitehorse are much more severe. Calgary also sees more daylight hours in the winter. Summers in Whitehorse are warm whereas Calgary's summers can be quite hot. Calgary also experiences much more rainfall, with thunderstorms being especially frequent in the summer months.
There are many great things to see on a trip to Calgary. If you visit in the summer, try to time your trip so you can catch the city's most famous festival, the Calgary Stampede. If you're a fan of winter sports, skiing and snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains are incredible winter activities.
