One of Alberta's busiest airports, Edmonton International Airport (YEG), is located approximately 26km south of downtown Edmonton in Leduc County. The airport consists of one passenger terminal, which was recently renovated in 2013 to increase capacity and functionality.
Nonstop flights are available from Edmonton to Comox Valley via WestJet. These direct flights between Edmonton and Comox Valley are generally relatively quick and inexpensive. Connecting flights are also available via airlines like Air Canada, with one stop in major cities like Calgary or Vancouver.
For domestic travel, passengers are encouraged to arrive at least 90 minutes before their departure time. You will need to bring one piece of government-issued ID that includes a photo and your name, date of birth and gender, or two pieces without photos. Passengers under the age of 18 will also need to bring their original birth certificate.
Comox Valley Airport Information
Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) is a Canadian Forces Base, with limited civilian aircraft use. Six airlines fly out of YQQ, limited to destinations in British Columbia and Alberta only. The airport is quite small, with only one café and one gift shop on site. If you need to recharge after your flight, you may consider heading straight to your hotel instead of staying at the airport. There are many great hotels and spas within 10km of the airport.
From the airport, you can catch a taxi, take a public transportation bus, or call your hotel to send a shuttle bus. There are also three car rental companies located on site.
What to Expect in Comox Valley
Comox Valley residents are lucky in that they experience mostly mild weather year-round. In the winter months, rain is more common than snow. Since Edmonton winters can be quite cold and snowy, you may want to escape to this British Columbia city between November and March.
Edmonton is only one hour ahead of Comox Valley, so you should not experience any ill effects due to the time change. Prices between the two cities are comparable, with Edmonton prices perhaps slightly higher.
When you visit Comox Valley, plan to spend much of your trip outdoors. The Valley has many attractions that are filled with natural beauty, like the Comox Glacier, Goose Spit Park and Kin Beach Provincial Park. A great way to see everything the city has to offer is to book an outdoor adventure tour with an experienced guide.
