Flying out of Bangkok

Since Bangkok is served by two international airports, both of which fly direct from Bangkok to Yangon, finding a cheap flight is simple. Bangkok's first airport, Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), is the oldest operating airport in Asia. Nok Air, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air all fly direct from DMK to Yangon. Each of these carriers uses Don Mueang's international terminal, Terminal 2.

Bangkok's second airport is Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), also known as Bangkok International Airport. The following airlines all fly direct from BKK to Yangon:

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi consists of one large passenger terminal with domestic and international areas. International passengers will first check in on the fourth floor then proceed to security on the fifth floor. You should arrive at the airport at least three hours before flight departure. Canadians entering Yangon, Myanmar for tourism or business purposes must present their valid travel documents, including a passport and a visa. You can apply at a Myanmar diplomatic mission or apply for an e-visa online. If approved, the visa will be valid for three months for a 28-day stay in the country.

Yangon International Airport Information

Yangon International Airport (RGN) is located about 15 km from downtown Yangon. It is the busiest international airport in the country. RGN is a hub for many airlines, including Myanmar Airways International and Myanmar National Airlines. The airport consists of three terminals. Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are used for international flights.

Transportation options at Yangon International Airport are limited to taxis and car rental. Currently, there are no public transit stops at the airport though there are bus stops within a 20-25 minute walk. A taxi service counter is located at arrivals in each terminal. The staff at the counter will then assist you in calling a taxi. A taxi to downtown Yangon will take around half an hour and cost about $15 CAD. Europcar is the only on-site option for car rental at RGN. A Europcar customer service representative will be available at arrivals at each terminal.

What to Expect in Yangon

The time difference between Bangkok and Yangon is only half an hour, so jet lag won't be a concern. Cost-wise, Yangon's meal prices are slightly higher than those in Bangkok. However, the Canadian dollar will stretch far in both cities. Weather-wise, Yangon's tropical monsoon climate means the months from May to October are hit with large amounts of rainfall and high humidity. November through April are generally dry. Year-round, there is little temperature variance, with average temperatures being in the mid-twenties.

The Canadian government advises Canadians to exercise caution when visiting Myanmar due to threats of violence. If you will be visiting Yangon, take your personal safety seriously by adhering to precautions, like travelling in a group and staying indoors at night.
