Cheap Flights to Utila Airport

Utila is the smallest of the three main Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast of Honduras.  For years, its pristine coral reefs have attracted scuba divers who are willing to sacrifice luxury on land for absolute perfection under the sea.  For those who prefer to stay on land, Utila offers some pleasant hikes, the chance to kayak through a mangrove forest and freshwater caves that just beg to be explored.  Although the Utila Airport is not large, it has a refreshingly laid-back atmosphere and convenient connections to the larger airports nearby.

Best Time to Book a Flight to Utila Airport

The best time to visit Utila is between January and August, when temperatures are warm, waters are calm and you're unlikely to encounter a tropical storm.  Avoid visiting the island during the week leading up to Easter, when it temporarily transforms from a relaxed diving haven to a non-stop party destination for mainland Hondurans.

Utila is famous for its local whale shark population, and your chances of encountering these giant animals increase during the hottest months of April and May.  Some people say that whale sharks appear most often around the full moon, while others swear that the new moon is preferable.  With Skyscanner's month search tool you can compare fares throughout the entire moon cycle to find the perfect flight to Utila.

Airlines that Fly to Utila Airport

Most flights into the Utila airport are private charters from Roatan, San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa.  These small planes typically seat between four and eleven passengers, and fly to the island whenever they have enough passengers to justify the cost.  At present, no major international airlines are flying to Utila, so Canadian travelers should look for flights to the Roatan Airport or the La Ceiba Airport, and then organize their own connection to Utila.

What to Expect When Arriving at the Utila Airport

The Utila Airport consists of a single runway (which doubles as a local road) and a small, one-story building guarded by a single member of the Honduran military.  Generally, travelers do not enter the building and should wait to access services like bathrooms and ATMs once they reach town.  When your flight lands you will wait on the tarmac for your bags to be unloaded, and then head directly to the adjacent parking lot where you may find ground transportation such as a tuk-tuk or golf cart that will take you to your accommodation.  If no transportation is available, flag down the first local person you see and they will be happy to help.

Tips and Advisories for Travel to the Utila Airport

Canadian travelers can stay in Honduras for up to ninety days without a visa.  The airport is not staffed by immigration officers, so if you arrive via an international flight you must head to the immigration office located across from the municipal dock in order to receive your entrance stamp.  Office hours may vary, but you'll have the best luck visiting on a weekday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
