When and how to get to Buenos Aires
Before you make plans to go, it's important to remember that Buenos Aires is deep down in the southern hemisphere, where the seasons switch around. If you want to go when it's most beautiful in the city, you need to pick October and November, spring in Buenos Aires. The most crowded times, however, are between December and February, which is summer. The months of June, July and August are considered the lean tourist season, because it's winter. It's a great time to come if you wish to head down to the Andean ski resorts of Bariloche, however.
Reaching Buenos Aires is easy. There are dozens of flights each day from North America, and tools like Skyscanner can help you find the best deals. You only need your passport. Argentina doesn't require Canadian citizens to apply for a visa for tourism-related visits under 30 days. All you need to do is to pay a $92 reciprocity fee before you get on the plane bound for Buenos Aires, and flash the receipt when you board your flight.
International flights arrive at the Ministro Pistarini airport in the suburb of Ezeiza, about 20 km from downtown Buenos Aires. While you can take an expensive taxi to the city, there are plenty of cheap buses. You can also choose to rent a car at one of many counters. For the best deals, you could plan ahead with a tool like Skyscanner.
There are money change counters at the airport, but they tend to be expensive. It's best to use a money changer in the city.
Domestic flights and flights to destinations in other countries in South America depart from a second airport called Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. It is 24 km. from the city and 45 km. from Ezeiza. Security is easy, but if you're internally transferring from one flight to another, you'll need to do quite a bit of walking. It's important to make sure you have enough time.
It's a clean and efficient airport with a Hard Rock Cafe and other dining options, and good, free Wi-Fi. If you're looking for storage lockers, you should ask at reception.
