Best Time to Book a Flight to Bermuda

High season in Bermuda is May through October. Air availability is scarce and hotels sell out quickly. The best time to go is in March or April. The weather is warm enough for sunbathing, though the water may be a bit chilly for swimming. The island also gets quite a bit of business during the December holiday season, especially from celebrities or other VIPs wanting to get away from it all. Getting to and Around Bermuda

Roughly 11 kilometres north of Hamilton, Bermuda's capital, you'll find the L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA). It's a small facility, with one terminal and eight gates, but its passenger services and runway are big enough to welcome the largest jets. Air Canada and WestJet bring passengers from Toronto-Pearson, while British Airways offers service from London-Gatwick. Carriers from various cities in the United States include American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United. The latter is on a seasonal basis from Newark, New Jersey.

Passenger arrivals are on the ground level of the two-story airport. One end is devoted to Customs and Immigration, which in addition to Bermudian arrivals, also takes care of U.S. Customs and Immigration for departures from the island to the United States. That way when you land in the USA you don't have to be re-screened. Shops, restaurants and services are on both terminal levels and Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Only locals are allowed to own cars, so rental cars are not available on Bermuda. Transportation options, available outside the arrival doors, include taxis, shuttles and the public bus system. A bus ride costs about $6.50 CAD and you may pay the driver in Bahamian Dollars. A taxi ride into downtown Hamilton runs about $45.00 CAD. Check with your hotel about shuttle service to their property. Once in town, you may opt to rent bicycles or scooters to get around.

What to See and Do in Bermuda

• For one of the best examples of those pink Bermuda beaches, check out Horseshoe Bay in Southampton Parish. The sand literally blushes, providing a photogenic contrast to the aqua-blue waters. One of the most popular beaches, it does get pretty crowded during the summer, and the water isn't as warm as you might expect. Show up on Good Friday and you'll see homemade kites flying high in the sky, a Bermudian tradition. Elbow Beach is another option. Located in Paget Parish, this family-friendly beach is less crowded, but just as pink. The waters off Elbow Beach are protected by reefs, making this a safer swimming spot.
• You never know if you'll spot a celebrity at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish. What you are sure to find are ocean views from nearly every tee and a challenging layout. Designed by golfer Robert Trent Jones, the course is open to the public daily. Book your tee date early, as slots fill up fast. If you're not a member you can also arrange your tee times up to seven days before play. Stop at the posh clubhouse afterwards for a drink or a meal, or both.
• To explore Bermuda from a different perspective, take a cruise tour. Choose from the Bermuda Full Moon Cruise, available roughly once a month, or the Bermuda Champagne Sunset Cruise, a nightly favourite. Another popular tour is to the Crystal or Fantasy Caves. Discovered in the early part of the 20th century, these caverns date back to the Ice Age. Choose to tour one or both caves and combine them with food or beverage options if you like.
• Want some authentic Bermuda shorts? Check out the shops along the waterfront in downtown Hamilton. Bold and bright is the norm for these knee-length shorts. You can find more subtle shades if you just can't handle the neon pinks, reds and blues. Of course, if you want to blend in with the locals, just choose a pair in any colour and combine those shorts with a collared short-sleeve shirt. Though some restaurants require long pants for evening dinner service, most of the time this outfit is good for just about anywhere.
