Travel requirements to New Zealand for Canadian citizens

If you're travelling from Canada to New Zealand, the first step is understanding the visa requirements. Securing the right visa makes your entry into New Zealand as smooth as possible. Let's explore all the necessary travel documents, visa types, and health requirements for Canadian citizens visiting New Zealand.

New Zealand visa requirements for Canadian citizens

Travellers need a travel authorization to visit New Zealand for Business or Tourism.

Visa-exempt visitors entering New Zealand must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Travellers can submit the eTA application online. Once the application is approved, travellers receive their eTA confirmation electronically.

An eTA is electronically linked to a passport and valid for up to 2 years. If travellers receive a new passport, they must apply for a new eTA.

A valid eTA is required to board the flight. If the eTA is expired or doesn’t match the traveller’s passport information, travellers will not be able to board their flight.

Travellers visiting New Zealand can work remotely as digital nomads for employers located outside of New Zealand. This applies to both Visitor visa recipients and New Zealand eTA holders. Travellers cannot work for New Zealand employers, provide goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand, or perform work requiring physical presence at a New Zealand workplace.

All travellers arriving at New Zealand airports must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration. Travellers are able to complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration a maximum of 24 hours before departure.

Travellers can complete the declaration online or via the mobile app. The mobile app may not be available to travellers in certain countries and regions.

When completing the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, travellers must provide their contact details, passport information, flight number, travel history from the last 30 days, luggage information, and immigration status (if required).

A paper declaration form is available for travellers unable to complete the form online.

This requirement doesn’t apply to the following travellers:

  • Travellers who are in transit.

Travellers need a valid passport to enter New Zealand. The traveller's passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after the traveller departs from New Zealand.

The traveller's passport may remain valid for at least 1 month after the traveller departs from New Zealand in the following situation:

  • If the issuing government has consular representation in New Zealand that can issue and renew travel documents. Travellers should check this with their issuing authority before travelling.
