The Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport (LIR), or Liberia Airport for short, welcomes flights from around the world to the nature lover's paradise of Costa Rica. Researching your travel options can be challenging since quite a bit of the information is in Spanish. Skyscanner's search engine can help you find the cheapest flight and provide help getting your hotel and rental car booked. Even if you're ready to try your Spanish wings, no harm in waiting until you land. Make your booking experience easy with Skyscanner.
Best Time to Book a Flight to Liberia Airport
Prime tourist season in Costa Rica is between mid-December and April. This is when hotels and airfares are the highest. You can still find a bargain if you book your trip as early as possible. You may get more rain in May and November but you will usually find it easier to get cheap airfare. Skyscanner's Whole Month Search program can help you find the best fare, no matter when you plan to visit. If you can be flexible, and book that great fare when you find it, you can save money.
Airlines That Fly to Liberia Airport
The Liberia Airport welcomes both regularly scheduled and charter flights. Some of the well-known carriers from North America include Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier Jetblue, US Airways and WestJet. Air Berlin also brings passengers from European destinations. Charter flights, some of which operate seasonally, include Air Transat, Sun Country, Sunwing and Tui. The latter is based in the United Kingdom. Sansa and Nature Air are domestic carriers that operate within Costa Rica.
What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport
Liberia Airport is on the small side, with one terminal and seven gates, but it does make it easier to navigate. You'll find an air conditioned restaurant, currency exchange counter, and a Duty-Free shop. All passengers exit out the same set of doors whether they clear customs or not. Rental car desks are near those doors and public transportation options are just outside. Taxis and airport shuttles are also outside the doors. You can just pick an available taxi but the Airport Shuttle requires pre-booking. Both taxi fares and shuttle fares can be negotiated. Most taxis are small so if you bring lots of luggage, be sure and book a shuttle, which can handle up to 12 people. For either option, you'll need Costa Rica Colons. The airport is 12 kilometres from downtown Liberia, a 15-minute drive.
What to See and Do in Liberia
You may be in Costa Rica, but travel some 10 kilometres south of Liberia's central core and you'll find the Africa Safari Adventure Park. Take a guided tour around the 30-hectare park and catch sight of more than 27 species of animals, including herds of zebras and gnus. The safari is part of the Ponderosa Adventure Park. Kayak down the Rio El Salto and ride a zipline through the tropical jungle. Right in Liberia town, find the Museum Granacastle, a converted barracks filled with Costa Rican art. Try your luck at the Casino Liberia or take a Costa Rica Green Life Tour with a firm located near the airport. Bring that camera and do some serious wildlife watching.
