What to See and Do in Charlotte

Charlotte, South Carolina, dates back to pre-Revolutionary War times. Named for the wife of England's King George III, the namesake queen's statue still graces the downtown core. Southern charm is on full display at Romare Bearden Park where free Wednesday evening concerts are held from May through September. It's considered one of the best places in the city to watch the sunset. Charlotte is also home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, complete with a race-car simulator where you can experience an eight-car race that feels like the real thing. Learn how this type of racing was born in the days of Prohibition when fast cars were used to evade police while transporting illegal moonshine. Another Southern specialty, fried chicken, is offered at Price's Chicken Coop, a casual take-away eatery that's been in business for decades. Latta Park is nearby, perfect for an impromptu picnic.
