Cheap Flights to Skopje Airport

Skopje (say Skop-yay), the capital of the Eastern European Republic of Macedonia, is famous for having given the world Mother Teresa. When you come here, it's possible to see why it had to be Skopje; it's a city of famously friendly and caring people. While there has been political turmoil in the region in the recent past, today, Macedonia and Skopje are thriving as great places to visit for their 2,000-year-old culture and architecture and for their natural beauty.

The river Treska, the Lake Matka, the quay on the beautiful river Vardar, the grand old bazaar, the fortress Kale from the year 1500, and the Renaissance era monastery of St. Pantelejmon all make Skopje lovely to spend time in.

The essentials: arriving in Skopje

People traveling on Canadian passports do not need a visa to enter Macedonia. For longer stays, however, you will need to approach the Macedonian Consulate General in Toronto.

If you planning to visit, you should remember is that Macedonia is at the heart of Europe and can get very cold in winter. Unless you're coming to witness Skopje the winter wonderland, you should choose to travel in July or August for the best time.

Skopje has been steadily gaining importance, and many international airlines now pass through the city at this point. Airlines such as Wizz Air, Turkish, Swiss, Austrian, Croatian, Czech, Smart Wings, Pegasus, and Air Serbia all have stops in this city.

If you're flying in, you should plan your trip well in advance. Services like Skyscanner offer great price search tools that can help you land deals on flights, hotels and car rentals. You can also take a train or bus in from elsewhere in Europe. The train station is at the center of the city with trains going to Serbia and Greece. Buses go everywhere, as well -- Istanbul is 13 hours away, for example.

Skopje's Alexander the Great Airport (the emperor of ancient times belonged to this region) is a small, modern, single-terminal airport.

The airport offers all the essentials -- free Wi-Fi all over the airport, ATMs, currency exchange, massage chairs and long seating without armrests, and some dining options. There are no luggage deposit stations, lockers or showers, however.

You may want to pay C$23 to enter the airport lounge for greater comfort. For some real rest, however, you'll have to find one of various affordable hotels around.

When you're ready to leave the airport, the Vardar Ekspres bus service takes you to the city for about C$ 5 (175 denar). If it's a taxi that you need, the ride to town costs C$ 30 (1,200 denar).

There's lots to do in Skopje close to the airport

While you can certainly take off from the airport and explore all of Macedonia, there is a lot to do close to the airport.

The 6th century vaulted stone bridge at Kamen Most in the Turkish quarter has been an icon of Macedonia for a long time, and it's something you should visit. The Daud Pasha Hamams or hot baths are great to relax in, and the Old Bazaar can be great for days of exploration. For some outdoor action, a trek up the Mt. Vodno can be fun; atop is is the largest cross on earth, erected to celebrate two millennia of Christianity. If it's just a taste of Skopje's atmosphere that you're looking for, doing taking in a Skopje walking tour with a group can be a wonderful idea.
