Discover Mauritius

Officially named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Mauritius Airport (MUR) is the African island nation of Mauritius’ main airport. It is also the home of the national air carrier, Air Mauritius.

With an interesting terminal building that was designed to resemble a local tropical palm, airport facilities at MUR include shops and restaurants, a pay-to-use lounge, a relaxing spa, a prayer room, children’s play areas, ATMs, currency exchange services, and more. Passengers flying in and out of Mauritius Airport can enjoy one hour of free Wi-Fi.

Mauritius Airport sits 48 kilometers outside of the capital of Port Louis. Well connected by road, many people use taxis or pre-arranged shuttle services to get to and from this airport. A taxi ride between the airport and Port Louis should cost around 1,500 MUR (approximately $56). If you are on a tight budget, bus number 198 connects Port Louis and Mahebourg Bus Station, passing the airport en route. The journey is cheaper, but it takes around 85 minutes.

Taxis and private transfers are the most common ways of accessing most of Mauritius’ tourist destinations and resorts from the airport.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius

The tropical climate in Mauritius means that the island has almost year-round warm and humid weather. November to April is the hottest time of year, with soaring temperatures that many people find unpleasant. Additionally, January to March is the wet season, with heavy rains, strong winds, and cyclones occurring quite often. May through December is the most popular time to visit Mauritius, because the weather is sunny and dry, with temperatures that are warm without being scorching.

Top Things to Enjoy in Mauritius

Mauritius’ capital of Port Louis is a terrific place to discover more about the country’s history, culture, and traditions. Major places of interest in Port Louis include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aapravasi Ghat, a former Coolie Ghat where many people arrived as indentured workers following the end of slavery, Travellers’ Lane, and the religious sites of Jummah Mosque and St Louis Cathedral. In addition to these attractions, visitors often like to immerse themselves in the local way of life at the lively Bazaar Port Louis, and they love to explore colourful Chinatown and enjoy the views from Caudan Waterfront.

For most people visiting Mauritius, though, the real highlights of the trip are the splendid beaches. The buzz and numerous watersports of Grand Baie attract many, and nearby beaches such as La Cuvette and Mont Choisy offer sunbathing on soft white sands and swimming in clear waters. The calm waters of Trou aux Biches make this beach popular with families and snorkelling enthusiasts, and the stunning Belle Mare Plage is ideal for all.

If you love outdoor activities and nature, Mauritius has plenty of gems to please, including Tamarind Falls and the Black River Gorges National Park.
