What to Expect When Arriving at Richmond Airport
Only 11 kilometres from downtown Richmond, the Richmond International Airport (RIC) is technically located in Sandston, Virginia. American and Delta are two of the busiest international carriers at this airport, as are the domestic airlines JetBlue and Southwest. Arrivals and departures all use the same single terminal with arrivals on the lower level. Connections on the Toronto to Richmond run usually happen in New York, either at Kennedy Airport or La Guardia, and at Chicago O'Hare.
The single terminal branches out into two concourses with separate security checkpoints for each one. American uses Concourse A, while Delta uses Concourse B. All other airlines share either one. Passenger services, including restaurants, shops and ATMs are found throughout the terminals, as is free Wi-Fi. Rental car desks are near the main terminal entrance. The rental car lot is right next door. A pick-up point for taxis and shuttles is outside those same doors. Taxis are metered, with the average fare into downtown Richmond roughly 35.00 CAD with moderate traffic. Shuttle rates depend on the vendor. What to Do and See in Richmond
- Whether you're interested in art, Civil War history or have a fondness for Edgar Allen Poe, there's a museum waiting for you. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has everything from Andy Warhol paintings to Faberge eggs. Many of these eggs were once gifts from Tzar Nicolas to Tzarina Alexandra early in the 20th century. Works are also on display in the outdoor sculpture garden. The restaurant Amuse overlooks the greenery.
- The Museum and White House of the Confederacy is a National Historic Landmark. It was the home of Jefferson Davis and his family. Today the restored antebellum mansion, which is truly white, contains memorabilia from the Civil War, including items collected on battlefields to those pieces used daily in Southern homes.
- Edgar Allen Poe lived and worked in Richmond. You'll find a collection of his manuscripts, a first printing of his poem "The Raven" and even his favourite vest in the Poe Museum. Tours are offered of the stone house and surrounding grounds. The gardens are a draw for painters, so don't be surprised if you see artists busy at work at their easels.
- More than a dozen Civil War battle sites surround Richmond. A good place to start is the Civil War Visitor Center, located on the James River. The spot now houses the Tredegar Iron Works but this was once the core of the Confederacy. Pick up a map and take the 130-kilometre driving tour from one historic site to another. You'll find additional visitor centers along the route to help you find your way.
