Flying out of Gillam Airport

Gillam Airport (YGX) is the only airport that serves the small town of Gillam, Manitoba. Gillam is located in northeastern Manitoba and the airport sits about 2 km north of the town. Though it is quite large in size, most of the town's surface area is uninhabited, with a total population of around 1,200 people.

Direct flights between Gillam Airport and Winnipeg airport are not available. The airport has only one airline, Calm Air, flying to just one destination: Thompson, Winnipeg. From Thompson Airport, Calm Air flies to a variety of towns in northern Manitoba and in Nunavut.

To fly from Gillam to Winnipeg, you will first fly to Thompson Airport. From there, you can fly direct to Winnipeg. The airline recommends checking in at least 90 minutes before flight departure. Calm Air accepts government-issued photo ID as identification for their domestic flights, so you will not need to have a passport to fly.

Winnipeg Airport Information

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG), better known as Winnipeg Airport, is the busiest airport in the province. The airport is located about 10 km from downtown Winnipeg. Winnipeg Airport consists of a Main Terminal and a Perimeter Terminal. However, the latter is only used by Perimeter Aviation.

The Main Terminal is a certified environmentally friendly building. There are many transportation links located at arrivals, including taxis, sedans, public transit buses and car rentals. A taxi ride to downtown Winnipeg will cost approximately $18 CAD and a ride in a sedan will cost $32 CAD. Sedans are great if you have a large group or have a lot of luggage to transport. Route 15 and Route 20 of Winnipeg Transit both stop at the airport terminal. Both routes have stops in downtown Winnipeg. An adult fare costs $2.70 CAD.

Across the road from the airport terminal in the four-story parkade, you'll find car rental service counters. These counters are located on the parkade's main level and include Avis, Enterprise, Hertz and National.

What to Expect in Winnipeg

Gillam and Winnipeg are located in the same time zone so there will be no time difference upon arrival. You will, however, experience much nicer weather when visiting Winnipeg, since Gillam is located at the northern end of the province and Winnipeg is at the southern end. The temperatures in Gillam are below freezing for the majority of the year, sometimes going as low as -25°C (without wind chill). The summers are short and mild. While Winnipeg does also have very cold winters, the temperatures are not quite as severe. The summers are also longer and much warmer though there is a high chance of thunderstorms from June to August. These storms can sometimes become severe enough for tornados to form.

The city may not be as flashy as Toronto or Vancouver, but with its rich history, fun market plazas and rejuvenating spas, Winnipeg is a great place to visit for a relaxing vacation.
