Flying out of Dublin Airport
Ireland's capital city, Dublin, is served solely by Dublin Airport (DUB). The airport is located approximately 10km north of the city. There are no airlines that fly direct from DUB to Calgary, but many offer flights with only one stop. The most common destinations for a layover include Toronto, London, and Frankfurt. You can book your flight from Dublin to Calgary through airlines such as Air Canada, British Airways, and Lufthansa.
Passengers should arrive at the airport no later than 90 minutes prior to your flight, with your airline ticket and valid passport. Since it takes around 45 minutes to get from Dublin's city centre to the airport, you'll have to plan well in advance to catch your flight in time. If you will be driving your own car, you should factor in at least an extra 30 minutes for parking at the airport.
The airport consists of two terminals, both of which offer many after-security shopping and dining options as well as a limited number of pre-security options. DUB also offers free Wi-Fi to use while you wait for your flight.
Calgary International Airport Information
Calgary International Airport (YYC) is located about 17km from downtown Calgary. It is one of Canada's top five busiest airports. Locally owned company Allied operates a convenient and affordable airport shuttle service that departs for downtown Calgary every half hour, but you can also take a taxi or limousine, catch a public transportation bus, or rent a car.
The airport has two terminals, one for domestic flights and one for international. The terminal you arrive at will depend on where your layover stop was.
What to Expect in Calgary
Calgary is known as one of Canada's best summer vacation spots, with such popular events as the Calgary Stampede. This ten-day annual festival celebrates western culture with things like a rodeo, a parade, and many concerts. If you visit in the summer, you can expect much hotter daytime temperatures in Calgary than those experienced in Dublin.
Calgary's beautiful Rocky Mountains are also great to visit in the summer for hiking and camping, or in the winter for skiing or snowboarding. If you visit Calgary during the winter, you can expect cold winters as opposed to Dublin's milder winter temperatures.
With Dublin being 7 hours ahead of Calgary, you will experience a shift between days and nights when you arrive. It is prudent to prepare in advance for the jet lag you are likely to feel.
