Best Time to Book a Flight to Ulaanbaatar Airport

The best time to visit Ulaanbaatar is during the summer, from June to August. The area is a bit quieter in May, September and October and the weather is still decent. Airlines That Fly to Ulaanbaatar Airport

Aero Mongolia and MIAT Mongolian Airlines are the two main carriers that fly in from different parts of Mongolia and some international locales. Aeroflot brings passengers from Moscow and Air China offers service from Beijing. Korean Air flies from Seoul and Turkish Airlines connects Mongolia to Istanbul. Flying from other locations, such as Canada, the United States or European countries, usually requires a connecting flight to one of the previously mentioned cities. Connections to Ulaanbaatar are also possible through Tokyo and Hong Kong.

What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport

The Ulaanbaatar Airport is a rather small venue and is located just over 12 kilometres from the city centre, about a 20 minute drive. Domestic and international arrivals are on the first floor of the Main Terminal. Passenger services, including an ATM and a restaurant. are located just outside of baggage claim and the security checkpoint. Transportation services are just outside the arrival doors.

Taxi rates are negotiated before leaving the airport. Costs may vary from $26.00 CAD to $80.00 CAD depending on your drop off point in the city, and possibly your negotiation skills. A local bus stop is right outside the terminal. The CH-7 bus takes you to downtown for about $2.00 CAD. Accepted currency is the Mongolian Tugrik. You'll need Mongolian money to purchase the bus card from the vending machine near the stop. Car rentals are available, with or without a driver. Some Ulaanbaatar hotels provide pre-arranged free shuttle service with a minimum night stay.

What to See and Do in Ulaanbaatar

Take a step back in time with a visit to the National Museum of Mongolia. You'll find Stone Age artefacts, burial relics from the Hun and Uighur dynasties, as well as ancient stone carvings of reindeer and other animals. Check out the Gandan Khiid, a Buddhist monastery that dates back to the 1800s or do some shopping in the city centre at the traditional Naraan Tuul Market. Sample traditional foods at Mongolians, a restaurant filled with Mongolian antiques and vintage photos. It's located near the US Embassy. Find Beatles Square, a monument dedicated to the famed rock group. The Fab Four were popular with teens during the 1970s, even though the records had to be smuggled in from Eastern Europe because they were banned. The bronze statues overlook a popular summer gathering space, complete with fountains.
