Discover Sarasota

Sarasota has proven its worth as a year-round tourist paradise with an abundance of warm beaches, outdoor activities, and breathtaking scenery. Sarasota is known for its local islands, or keys, which separate the Sarasota Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. Six of those keys are part of the city itself and provide perfect photo opportunities for snap-happy tourists. Sarasota is one of Florida's top six LGBT-friendly locations, so you'll soon find the city's the perfect destination to fall in love, impress important business colleagues, or just reconnect with the family.

Sarasota Attractions

The entire family won't be able to get enough of Sarasota. Parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, wilderness refuges, boat tours, fishing, and watersports call to kids of all ages. The Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, Goldstein Cabaret Theatre, and The Players Theatre cater to culture enthusiasts. Feeling a bit peckish? From sunlit mornings through magical starlit nights, savor the delights and stories at favorite local haunts like Station 400, Oh Mamma Mia!, and Clásico Café and Bar. And club-hopping night owls can always find their tribe at The Gator Club and 5 O'Clock Club.

Landing at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport

The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport or SRQ is the primary commercial service airport of Sarasota and Manatee counties. Located in Sarasota County, it's three miles from the town of Sarasota and six miles from Bradenton in Manatee County. Over 10,000 passengers board annually, but winter and spring are SRQ's busiest months since it's such a coveted seasonal tourist destination for snowbirds (northern state residents and Canadians).

Public transit services are at the west end of the baggage claim area. Buses run to both counties 12 hours per day, but the lines can be crazy. One full-service taxi service is available, but so are Uber and Lyft options. Also, many hotels provide shuttle services to and from the airport for their registered guests. Check with your hotel before paying extra for transportation.

Home of the Greatest Showman on Earth

Sarasota has been home to many of the state's most affluent residents such as circus magnate, John Ringling. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Cà d'Zan, Ringling's sprawling 35,000-square-foot mansion residence, can be accessed daily right on the water's edge. Experience just a taste of the opulence one of the world's greatest showmen lived. Over 150,000 square feet display the physical remnants of his life. View over 10,000 objects, world-renowned paintings, sculptures, photos, and decorative arts worthy of the world's greatest museums. The circus museum appeals to all ages. And the historic Asolo Theater is the perfect place for arts enthusiasts to enjoy local culture and talent.

Sarasota beaches are free, the city hosts free art walks on the first and third Fridays of the month, and local bar happy hours offer cheap booze and bar food. However, you'll probably still want to bring some extra cash to ensure an unforgettable experience. Of course, with the money you'll save on the flight, that shouldn't be a problem.
