What to expect when arriving at the airport
Montevideo International Airport is located in the suburb of Carrasco, about 15 km east of the downtown core. The public buses are a cheap and easy way of getting to the city centre. Any bus marked "Montevideo" will take you to the Tres Cruces Terminal in downtown Montevideo. You can also get a taxi, although this option is expensive. Fare are accepted in both Uruguayan pesos and US dollars, but it's usually cheaper to pay in pesos. The road system in Uruguay is also mostly well-maintained, making renting a car when you get to the airport a good idea, especially if you are venturing outside of Montevideo.
Airport facilities
Montevideo's new airport has won many accolades for its design and it's easy to see why. It is a light-filled building that is easy to navigate and with typically short wait times. While it is still a rather small facility for an international airport, you will find enough stores and restaurants to satisfy most passengers, including a wine store showcasing Uruguayan wine and a hair salon. Restaurants are limited, with a McDonald's being the only fast-food chain. There is, however, the Patria Restaurant & Bar on the third floor serving more local dishes. WiFi is also free and available throughout the terminal.
What to see and do in Montevideo
Montevideo is best thought of as a more low-key, laid back, and, perhaps, better run version of Buenos Aires. The Uruguayan capital offers an eclectic mix of old and new architecture and much of the delight of visiting this city consists of wandering its old cobblestoned streets. The Rambla, along the riverfront, offers great views of the river and is spectacular at sunset. Uruguay is also famous for its meats, and visiting a parrilla for some perfectly grilled meat or grabbing a chivito (the local hamburger) from a food truck is the perfect way to top off the Montevideo experience. You can use Skyscanner's hotel search page to help you find the perfect room while in the Uruguayan capital.
