The Republic of Djibouti is located on the eastern coast of the continent, that region commonly known as the Horn of Africa. The nation isn’t exactly vast, covering an area that’s just over 23,000 square kilometers. It is bordered on one side by Eritrea, Somalia, and Kenya to the west and the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to the east. There are only ten airlines that call JIB home, and most of them are based in other African nations or Middle Eastern countries. The only European resident here is Air France, a holdover from colonial times. Distance requires at least one stop for all flights, and some trips require two.

• Turkish Airlines is one of the few carriers that can get you to JIB with only one connection in Istanbul.
• Air Canada serves this route through a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, with stops in France and Ethiopia.
• Porter Airlines even gets in on the action by teaming up with Qatar Airways. This route requires only one stop, provided you leave from YUL in Montreal.

Upon arrival in JIB, you’ll notice the airport has a single terminal and one baggage carousel. The good news is that it’s almost impossible to get lost in this airport, but the downside is that there are only the essential amenities offered in the passenger terminal. There is an upscale VIP lounge for diplomats and other notable travelers.

What to see and do in Djibouti

The busiest time for visiting Djibouti is during the spring, between May and July, or the month of December when the weather is cooler. There are also a number of holidays and festivals celebrated during this time, including holy days in both the Muslim and Christian calendar.

• Independence Day takes place in June and is celebrated with elaborate military parades in the capital city.
• The Grand Bara is a 15 kilometer marathon through the desert, which takes place in December.
• Fest’Horn is a music festival that includes artists, composers, and musicians from across the Horn of Africa.
• The African Quarter of central Djibouti has a thriving central market that focuses on fruit, vegetables, and spices. The 19th century Hamoudi Mosque is also in this neighborhood.
