Guatemala City
Welcome to the land of eternal spring, so nicknamed because of the pleasantly cool, temperate climate that makes this region ideal to visit at any time. Tourism is finally making substantial inroads in this still-developing nation, thus the recent and ongoing expansions to La Aurora International Airport (GUA). This is the main airport in Guatemala and the fourth busiest in Central America but is still quite small by international standards.
Cheap flights to La Aurora International Airport
Flights to Guatemala tend to be cheaper during the rainy season, which extends from May to October, but the months of July and August tend to have drier weather and are also popular. Semana Santa, an extended holiday in April that revolves around Easter, is the busiest time of the year for both domestic and international traffic.
Best time to book a flight to La Aurora International Airport
As the transportation prices don't fluctuate much throughout the year, when you book depends mostly on your own preferences. If you are adverse to wet weather and don't mind paying a bit more or tourist venues that are on the more crowded side, you should book a flight for July or August. June tends to be the rainiest month, so for clear skies look for flights in the early spring months of February and March. Try to avoid busy holiday times, unless you want to experience unique cultural festivals like Semana Santa, in which you should try to book well in advance.
Airlines that fly to La Aurora International Airport
There are no Canadian airlines that fly directly to Guatemala, but you can connect with several American ones that do. United and American Airlines both fly direct from major cities in the US, so you can start your trip in Canada but you will need to make at least one connection. La Aurora International Airport (GUA) is connected to several Central American destinations along with busy transport points in Mexico such as Cancun and Mexico City. The only European airline represented here is Spain's national airline, Iberia.
Airport Facilities
GUA is still big enough to have two luxury VIP lounges, however, they are exclusively reserved for Iberia's business class travelers and passengers on United Airlines and Copa Airlines, which connects from Panama. The airport is not open 24 hours and there are few amenities available, with the exception of a few basics including bathrooms, WiFi, and a cafe.
What to expect when arriving at La Aurora International Airport
The two terminals are referred to as North and Central. The majority of passenger traffic arrives at the North Terminal, with the exception of Interjet, Veca Airlines, and Avianca Guatemala. Most nearby hotels will send a shuttle for guests, and there are several nearby hotels that can accommodate those without prior reservations.
What to see and do in Guatemala City
A rich cultural heritage that includes the ancient Mayans and the medieval Spanish conquistadors await. Rain or shine, there's plenty of ways to immerse yourself in local history. The Museo Popol Vuh is an ideal place to start and includes archaeological relics along with Colonial artifacts and artwork. Another sight of note is the National Palace, referred to locally as the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, which is a museum in addition to being an important cultural hub and historic center.
