Getting to Verona, Italy
Canadians can fly to Verona through a wide variety of international airlines, including Lufthansa, KLM, Air Canada, and more! Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Canada to Verona, so you'll have to stop in a major European city like Amsterdam (AMS), Frankfurt (FRA), or Paris (CDG).
Because Italy is part of the Schengen area, Canadians can visit without a visa for up to 90 days. However, you'll still need a passport that is valid for at least 3 months longer than you plan on staying.
The Best Time to Visit Verona
The best time to visit Verona depends on your budget and what you want to see while you're there. Peak season for tourists is during the months of July and August, when the hot weather is perfect for sightseeing and the city holds its annual opera festival. From May to June and September to October, flight and hotel prices drop making it the perfect time to see the city on the cheap while the weather is still nice. If you're planning a romantic vacation, consider visiting the city over Valentine's Day, when Verona hosts a 4-day "Verona in Love" festival in honor of the Shakespeare play that made Verona famous. You won't want to miss it!
What to Do in Verona
A visit to Verona wouldn't be complete without visiting some of its most famous sites. The Arena di Verona, a beautifully preserved 1st-century amphitheatre in the same style as Rome's Colloseum, dominates the city's skyline. In July and August, it is home to Verona's opera festival and some of the most fantastic operas in Europe. During the rest of the year, you can tour the building during the day! Juliet's House is another extremely popular tourist destination. Inspired by the famous balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, this house bears no relation to the play at all, but has become a popular shrine to romance in recent years.
Castel San Pietro is just a short walk from the city's Old Town, and offers a gorgeous view overlooking the city centre. If you love Italian design and fashion, you should check out Verona's Via Mazzini shopping district, located between Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe. Almost all the major Italian labels are represented, and it makes for an excellent place to window shop and people watch.
