Discover Nanking / Nanjing

Nanjing (sometimes still referred to as Nanking) is one of China's most fascinating cities, with a rich history and cultural heritage. The word Nanjing translates as "Southern Capital" in English (with Beijing being the "Northern Capital"), which attests to Nanjing's central role in Chinese history. Today, that proud past, complete with a handful of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, makes Nanjing an excellent if under-visited destination for travellers.

Nanjing International Airport is one of the most important airports in China, with plenty of flights to domestic destinations and quite a few international ones. Thanks to Skyscanner's Whole Month search tool, finding the cheapest time of year to fly to Nanjing is easier than ever.

Best Time to Book a Flight to Nanjing

Nanjing has four seasons, with summers being very hot, humid, and rainy. Winters, on the other hand, are chilly, with temperatures frequently dipping below zero and snowfall a possibility. That leaves spring and autumn as the two seasons that are ideal for a visit, when temperatures are comfortable and rainfall is moderate. Skyscanner's Price Alerts will help you grab any deals on flights to Nanjing, no matter when you want to go.

Airlines that Fly to Nanjing Airport

Nanjing International is a fast-growing airport and dozens of airlines from around the world currently fly here. Nanjing is a focus city for China Eastern Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines, while China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines also offer a large number of flights. Together, those four airlines fly to just about every major Chinese city, with China Eastern also offering international flights to the rest of Asia, Australia, the United States, and Canada. Other important airlines include Air China, Asiana Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Scoot, and Vietnam Airlines.

What to Expect When Arriving at the Airport

Located 35 km from Nanjing city centre, Nanjing Airport is well connected to the city and the surrounding region. The airport is connected to Line S1 of the Nanjing Metro, which offers affordable 35-minute trips to Nanjing South Railway Station. There are also two shuttle buses, with one heading to Nanjing Railway Station and the other to Nanjing South Railway Station. Each bus departs every 30 minutes. The airport is also connected to the expressway, which is great if you rent a car or hire a taxi.

Airport Facilities

Nanjing Airport is currently undergoing major renovations and expansion work, which has left Terminal 1 temporarily closed and Terminal 2 picking up the slack. That has led to significant delays and crowding, so you will need to have some patience. Those problems should be addressed once the expansion work is finally complete. At Terminal 2 you can expect to find most of the major American fast food chains, but WiFi service is notoriously unreliable.

What to See and Do in Nanjing

Nanjing offers a plethora of sights, including the Nanjing Museum, which highlights the region's imperial and national history, and the Presidential Palace, which was formerly the seat of Chinese Emperors and the Republic of China (before it was forced to Taiwan). The Purple Mountain, meanwhile, is where you will find the city's Ming Dynasty tombs, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum, which is the resting place of the man considered the Father of Modern China. When looking for a hotel in Nanjing let Skyscanner help you find a great place to stay.
