Cheap Flights to the Falkland Islands
Located just east of Argentina in the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands is a top tourist destination for gorgeous scenery and incredible wildlife. The country is made up of hundreds of smaller islands as well as two larger land masses known as the East Falklands and the West Falklands. Both of the country's major airports are located in the East Falklands. If you're planning a trip to the Falkland Islands, make your trip planning much simpler by downloading the Skyscanner Mobile App. This free app allows you to search for cheap flights, find hotels, and book car rentals, all on your mobile device. Once your travel plans are set, you can even use the app to easily share your plans with friends and family.
Best Time to Book a Flight to the Falkland Islands
Unlike many islands, the weather in the Falkland Islands is generally cool and windy, not warm and balmy. Rainfall is also very common throughout most of the year. Since the coldest weather can generally be found between June and August, most tourists prefer to visit during the rest of the year. However, since there are really no periods of extreme hot or cold in the Falkland Islands, there's not really a bad time to visit. If your vacation dates are flexible, let Skyscanner show you when you'll get the best deals with the Cheapest Month Search Tool.
Airport and Airline Options the Falkland Islands
There are currently two airports serving the Falkland Islands. The larger and busier airport is Mount Pleasant Airport (MPN), located 53 km from Stanley, the country's capital. Mount Pleasant Airport is primarily a Royal Air Force station but civilian flights are available a couple times per week. The airport is served by LATAM Airlines Chile and Royal Air Force. From MPN, you can fly to Chile, Argentina, and England.
The Falkland Islands' second airport option is Port Stanley Airport (PSY). This airport is located much closer to Stanley, at about 3.5 km east. The Falkland Islands Government Air Service operates the only flights out of the airport and makes stops at multiple locations in the East Falklands and in the West Falklands.
Arriving at the Airport
If you're flying to the Falkland Islands from an international location, you'll fly into Mount Pleasant's one small passenger terminal. For civilian passengers, there are a few amenities available upon arrival, like small cafés. Public transportation links are currently unavailable at the airport, so a taxi will be your best bet. As the airport is located over 50 km from the nearest major city, be prepared for a long taxi ride of at least an hour. You should also book your pickup in advance as taxis rarely wait outside the airport.
What to See and Do in the Falkland Islands
Volunteer Point, located about two hours from Stanley, is a major tourist attraction for the Islands. This bird conservation area hosts king penguins, Gentoo penguins, Falkland steamer ducks, and many other bird species. Southern elephant seals can also be seen at the Point. Volunteer Point is free to visit and always open for tourists. Most people choose to day trip from Stanley but limited accommodation is also available at the Point.
