Discover Granites
Granites Airport (GTS) is located in the Tanami Desert of Australia’s Northern Territory. Primarily serving the huge Granites gold mine, it is mainly used by mine workers and people on mine-related business. The remote nature of the surrounding area makes having private transportation essential if you wish to explore. While the workers rarely visit the airport, there are many business travelers who heavily rely on the airport to fly in and fly out.
The Granites gold mine is one of the most remote mines in all of Australia. Indeed, the nearest communities and settlements are more than 350 kilometres away, with the native communities of Lajamanu and Yuendumu lying to the north and south, respectively. It is also the largest gold mine in the Northern Territory.
The Tanami Desert, crossed by the Tanami Track, is home to several indigenous groups, including the Kukatja, Walpiri, and Tjurabalan peoples. The rocky landscapes are scattered with sacred sites. The vast and little-explored area is also known for its biodiversity and for being home to many rare and endangered native creatures. The grey falcon, freckled duck, and little native mouse are amongst the creatures that roam the desert.
Canadian passport holders need to apply for an electronic travel authorization visa (eTA) before visiting Australia, though the online process is quick and easy.
