Located 16km outside of both downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is a convenient Minnesota airport choice. The airport consists of two passenger terminals and is served by more than 15 airlines. A rail system is in place to transport passengers between the two terminals every 10-15 minutes.

Delta Air Lines and its subsidiary Delta Connection both offer direct flights from MSP to Edmonton International Airport. Airlines such as United Airlines, Air Canada and Alaska Airlines offer flights with one layover, usually in Toronto or Seattle.

International passengers should arrive at the airport at least two and a half to three hours before departure. The airport has restaurants, bars, gift shops, golf course simulator machines, a spa, free Wi-Fi and much more to keep you busy while you wait. Other budget-friendly ground transportation options include the Edmonton Skyshuttle, which stops at hotels and other major points throughout the city, and public transportation buses.

Since one of Canada's most beautiful small towns, Legal, is only an hour's drive from the airport, you may prefer to rent a car to give you more travel flexibility. There are seven rental car companies located at the airport to assist, including Enterprise and Thrifty.

What to Expect in Edmonton

Edmonton is only one hour behind Minneapolis, so you should not suffer from jet lag upon arrival. Meal prices are lower in Edmonton than they are in Minneapolis, so be sure to try a signature bison burger with a side of poutine. The city is also known for their green onion cakes: fried, flaky pastries peppered with chopped green onion.

The wind chill factor can make winter temperatures in Edmonton quite severe. If you visit between November and March, stay warm and explore the indoor West Edmonton Mall, North America's largest shopping mall. The mall is complete with over 800 stores, a water park, an amusement park and much more. In the warmer months, places like Fort Edmonton Park and Elk Island National Park are both fun and family friendly destinations.
