Flying from Auckland International to Toronto

At this time, there are no nonstop services between Auckland and Toronto; most flights connect in Vancouver, Los Angeles or in cities in China. It is not necessarily a bad thing. Connecting flights mean savings. If you're planning a trip to Toronto, here are helpful tips.

Flying out of Auckland international

The busiest airport in the country, Auckland International consistently ranks among the top 20 best airports of the world.

The airport is 21 km south of Auckland's downtown area and is easily reached by public transportation. Unlike in many other cities, public transportation to the airport runs 24x7. The trip is time-efficient, taking no more than an hour, and it costs $18 one way. Other bus services include Intercity and Naked Bus (so named because it's a low-cost bus service that's stripped out all the frills). Both are services that come in from around the country. This being New Zealand, there are even bicycle paths leading right up to the airport.

If you're keen on duty-free shopping, Auckland International has a good selection, and they let you shop online. You get to pick up your stuff when you actually get to the airport on the day of your flight. If you're the kind of person who tends to get nervous about making it to your flight on time, downloading the airport's app is a good idea. They keep an eye on flight delays and traffic conditions, and send you alerts about when they feel you should get started from home.

Auckland International is a good airport, but like so many others around the world, it shortchanges passengers in a few significant ways. To begin, it's a crowded and understaffed airport. Lines tend to be long, and arriving with a couple of extra hours on hand is likely a good strategy.

If it's raining, you should probably bring an umbrella when you set off from home. If you don't have one, you're likely to get wet walking from the carpark to the airport building, and again, walking from the bus to the airplane (this airport is known to run out of available jet bridges from time to time).

Arriving at Toronto Pearson

Toronto Pearson is Canada's busiest airport, and it can often show. If you happen to arrive at a crowded time, you can expect to spend a couple of hours in various lines and at baggage claim before you make it out.

While the airport does provide assistance to the disabled, they tend to have few wheelchairs and few personnel to help many people. For this reason, passengers often need to take care of themselves -- it isn't unusual to see disabled passengers wait a couple of hours, or sustain injuries while being helped by untrained staff. It can help to pack your own collapsible aisle wheelchair.

Dining can be a problem after hours as well. If your flight arrives past 10 p.m., stores and dining outlets begin shutting down, and you'll get nothing other than sandwiches. It's important to keep this in mind, and perhaps pack a meal if you arrive late.

Getting from the airport to town, you have your choice of public transportation or rental cars. Public transportation consists of several bus routes run by Toronto Transit Commission, and private bus services. If you need to simply move between terminals 1 and 3, there is the Link Train service that runs at all hours. The Union Pearson Express train takes you downtown in 25 minutes, as well. If you plan to rent a car, you'll see all the desks near the arrival gates. Use a tool like Skyscanner to get your deals ahead of time.
