We had an amazing stay at the Manor House Hotel and Spa. We specifically wanted to stay in the historic house itself, and it did not disappoint. We stayed in Room 37, which, while traditional in style, was full of character—including a charming hidden bathroom that added to the unique experience.
Every member of staff we encountered was exceptionally polite and friendly, making us feel truly welcome. The spa was clean and well-maintained, with robes provided upon entry and secure lockers with keys for convenience.

Sadly underwhelming

My husband who is not at all fussy described it as the most disappointing place he’s ever stayed. That’s in part due to the difference between how it’s described (luxury spa) vs reality. It’s not luxury and doesn’t compare to nearby spa hotels. We sat in the car stunned after leaving we had lost over £350 on such a sub par experience.
I have never stayed in a double room anywhere in the world with a bed that can’t comfortably fit two people. The room and bed felt cramped. The building has character which is let down by lack of care and attention inside.
We had a deal which included dinner, spa, treatment and breakfast which sounded like good value. It wasn’t. The spa has minimal amenities and was too busy for access to some. The “welcome” drink was less than half a bottle of innocent smoothie poured over ice in a plastic champagne flute, so probably 100ml. We weren’t told prior to arrival that they don’t provide footwear so had to walk around the spa in bare feet. The men’s changing room reflected a school gym changing room from the 70s. Food was of a low standard. We opted for simple meals based on our experience. The chicken burger was a tiny chicken breast that filled half the bun, fries were greasy. Beer burger was fine.
The pictures on trip advisor look lovely but I can only assume this is the part of the hotel used for weddings and events.
We had a charge we queried at checkout and were told that the £25pp allocation for dinner didn’t include drinks. Our total dinner bill was well under the £50 and that should have been made explicit. It was a fitting note to end on.
I picked the hotel based on the website and reviews on trip advisor. There was not one specific thing to raise as a complaint just that generally the standards and quality are poor and do match the idea of a “luxury spa hotel”. No water in the room, half used rolls of toilet paper in our bathroom on arrival, minimal coffee and tea. Decor shabby. We wanted a relaxing night away and sadly didn’t get it.
The staff were all warm and friendly and for a general stay it would be acceptable (for an appropriate price). For a special trip or luxury spa experience I’d consider some where else.

Lovely location but very tired and dated with ridicoulous rules if you pay by cash you need to leave a driving licence on there files madness!!
The place needs a refurb and food is very expensive sides like chops etc are all extras staff not the politeist just would not return but wish them the best

A very comfortable and friendly hotel. The reception staff could have been clearer about the cost of breakfast for non-inclusive guests when we we checked in. There was a limited selection of hot drinks in our bedroom.

Ridiculous additional charges for leisure facilities

I booked this hotel through Expedia on the basis it had leisure facilities for my children.
I have been many times before in the past and it has been ok.
When I was looking at the hotel’s details via the Expedia app there was nothing to suggest that there were any additional charges to use the leisure facilities.
However, as soon as I had made the booking and the money had left my account, I receive correspondence from the hotel advising of charges for the leisure facilities.
£20per adult and £7.50 each for the children for an hours swim during specific times!!
I was absolutely flabbergasted, I have always stayed at hotels and have never experienced this before.
I spoke to the hotel direct and they confirmed that this was the case and apparently this is reflected in the room rate……£130?…….for a night in West Auckland……I don’t think so!!!
Last time my Mum, my sister and I had treatments there, there was a massive brawl in the car park!!
I contacted Expedia who were very understanding and clarified that they were not aware of this either and this was not included in the hotels description advertised on Expedia.
The call handler was very apologetic and contacted the hotel, I was told that the contact at the hotel was not understanding of this matter and it had to be escalated to the manager who was not on shift until the afternoon.
Be very careful booking this hotel due to additional charges and poor customer service.
We stayed at a holiday inn instead in Newcastle where there were no hidden charges, no restrictions on children’s swimming times and lovely friendly accommodating staff.
