The official name is a bit of a mouthful; Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), which is why it’s almost always referred to simply as Zanzibar Airport. The nation of Zanzibar is actually an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, and ZNZ is located a few kilometers south of Zanzibar City on the island of Unguja Island. This airport is medium to large, with plenty of seasonal flights, as this is a popular vacation destination for those in the know.

The size of this airport and the number of airlines that call it home might surprise you, as it seems large in proportion to the size of the archipelago itself. Airlines from far away places like Amsterdam, Italy, and Warsaw have a presence here, even if it is at certain times of the year, and there are several regional airlines to choose from if you need to make a short commuter flight or find a low-cost ticket to destinations in Africa, the Middle East, or Southeastern Asia. Flights from Canada to Zanzibar depart from Toronto’s airport, Pearson International (YYZ), or Pierre Elliot Trudeau International in Montreal. Every flight requires at least one stop, often two.

There are two terminals at ZNZ, and international flights land in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 handles domestic traffic and has undergone extensive renovations recently.

Songs, stories, and poems have told the tale of Zanzibar’s romantic beauty for generations. There’s a lot to see and do on this small archipelago, from natural wonders to seaside nightlife. The nation consists of four main islands, Unguja Island, which is also called Zanzibar, Pemba Island, Latham Island, and tiny, uninhabited Mafia Island. • International Triathlon and Marathon events take place in November, and attract participants from all over the world. This challenging event has an Olympic scope and are set in some of Zanzibar’s most impressive locations.
• Mwaka Kogwa is a religious festival with it’s roots in the ancient spiritual beliefs of Zoroastrianism. This unique event includes mock fights with banana stems and a burning hut to celebrate the Shirazi New Year. This unique holiday takes place in the bottom half of July and is focused in the village of Makunduchi on Unguja Island.
