Getting to Ekaterinburg Airport

Koltsovo Airport (SVX) is one of the busiest airports in Russia, offering many domestic and international flight routes. It is a hub for RusLine and Ural Airlines, but also offers flights from international carriers like Finnair and Czech Airlines. With so many great international flights to Ekaterinburg, you're sure to find one that fits your budget!

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Canada to Ekaterinburg. To get there, you'll have to fly through a major international airport first, like those found in Paris (CDG), Barcelona (BCN), or Beijing (PEK).

To travel to Russia, all Canadians must apply for a tourist (if staying in a hotel) or guest (if staying at a private accomodation) visa online through the Embassy of the Russian Federation's website. You'll also need proof of a return flight and a passport that is valid for at least 6 months past your expected date of departure.

The Best Time To Visit Ekaterinburg

Russia has a climate that is very similar to Canada in a lot of ways. May-August are the warmest months with the smallest amount of rainfall, making them popular for tourists. However, if you travel in spring or autumn, you can find great deals on flights and hotels. We recommend avoiding travel to Russia from November to February, as it's just too cold to enjoy yourself and explore the city.

What to Do in Ekaterinburg

Ekaterinburg is a great base camp if you plan on exploring the Ural Mountains, as it's centrally located with a huge international airport, making it extremely tourist-friendly! Of course, you could always spend some time exploring the city, too! Here are a few of the most popular sites:

  • The Church of the Blood is by far the most famous tourist spot in Ekaterinburg. Built on the site where the last Tsar of Russia and his family were killed by the Bolsheviks, the church finished construction in 2003. Tourists visiting during Easter week are given the special privilege of ringing the church bells themselves!
  • The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center is a modern museum featuring social, educational, and cultural exhibits in honor of Russia's first president. It opened its doors in 2015.
  • Kharitonov Palace is arguably one of the most spectacular residences in the Ural Mountains, featuring a beautifully landscaped palatial garden that is free for the public to enjoy. It's a great place to stop for a picnic or take some photos.
