When most people think of Nevada, they think of Las Vegas; if it's an action and adventure trip in Nevada that you're interested in, however, Reno is the gateway to head for. Reno, "The Biggest Little City in the World," is the perfect place to start such an adventure trip. From whitewater rafting on the great Truckee river to ballooning in the sky and speeding down Mount Rose on skis in winter, Reno offers it all. There's plenty of casino activity to try, as well.

Essentials: when and how to get to Reno

Canadians need no visa to travel to the United States. While there are no nonstop flights that do the route, you can connect. April and May are the best months to visit for summer activities. The weather is warm and pleasant without being too warm. The months of October and November are best for winter activities.

Whenever you may plan to come, you need to be aware that throughout the year, airlines and hotels raise their prices on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the days that people all around arrive in the Reno area to try their luck at the casinos. The other days tend to be cheaper. You can easily use a tool like Skyscanner for a map of the cheapest times of the month or year to travel.

Reno has a small airport with two concourses in one terminal. There's a modest range of dining and shopping outlets, but they close at night. There is free Wi-Fi, however.

The airport allows passengers to spend the night, but you are restricted to the arrivals area. There are long, cushioned benches that are free of armrests that are great to sleep on.

This airport provides a number of unusual conveniences. There are Art in the Airport exhibits, free courtesy phones, children's play areas, dog parks and even casino gaming machines, if you're in the mood to try your luck.

When you're ready to leave the airport, Reno is a 10-minute ride away. There is a city bus that makes a stop at the airport on weekdays. It connects the airport to the Amtrak station and the bus station. Many hotels in the area provide shuttle services, and the North Lake Tahoe Express takes you to the Lake Tahoe-Truckee River district. There are cabs and rental cars, as well.

Taking in everything the area has to offer

Lake Tahoe, Lake Pyramid and Lake Donner are less than an hour's drive from the airport. The crystal-clear waters of these lakes are great for swimming, and there is excellent shopping and golfing, dining and nightlife, everywhere around. If you're here in winter, the wonderful ski resorts of the area offer perfect skiing opportunities. Squaw Valley, a ski resort in the district, is so good, it actually hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Making your way to the Truckee or Carson River, you have every kind of water adventure to look forward to, from swimming and fishing to sailing, whitewater rafting and kayaking.

When you're ready for some urban fun, the city of Reno has a range of activities. Chief among them are the casinos and shopping outlets. Reno is famous for its breweries and distilleries, as well. You'll find a few big names to explore.
