Cheap Flights to Lusaka Airport
Zambia is one of Africa's most popular tourism destinations for its abundant wildlife reserves. Home to Victoria Falls and several major national parks that host a staggering variety of life, the country is an ecotourism hotspot, safaris being the biggest draw. If you plan to pass through the capital of Lusaka at some point in your journey, it can be a rewarding place to take in.
Arriving in Lusaka
The government of Zambia requires Canadians to apply for a visa well ahead of time. It's possible to apply online.
The months of May, June, July and August are the best times to travel to this country. Temperatures tend to be warm, and rain is rarely an impediment. Using the Skyscanner flight search tool can help you identify the most competitively priced tickets for your trip.
Lusaka's airport is adequate, with businesses and counters open 24 hours a day offering basic shopping, currency exchange and food. There is decent Wi-Fi, and there are ATMs available. If you hope to be able to spend the night at the airport before you carry on with the rest of your trip, the airport is considered by many travelers to be too cold. There are few seats available, but it's possible to bring a sleeping bag to sleep in.
If you're departing, the IAPCO lounge is available close to flight departure times; it closes at other times. While it has no facilities for sleep, there is air-conditioning, a bar, disabled access, a phone and television. If you plan to sleep in the departure lounge, security personnel are known to disallow it at times.
If you need a rest, the best way to get it would be to make reservations at a nearby hotel. There are plenty of inexpensive options available. Most good hotels offer their own airport transfers in return for payment. Dependable taxis are available right outside the airport, as well.
Looking around the city of Lusaka
As wonderful as Zambia's natural beauty is, the attractions of the city of Lusaka, itself, can be limited. Still, there are things to do.
The Chaminuka game reserve is a mere 20-minute drive from Lusaka airport. A very professionally run organization, Chaminuka offers a number of excellent guided wildlife safaris and other tours. Their day-trips include botanical walks, a cheetah experience, a bush walk and a game drive. If you're in Lusaka on a Sunday, the Sunday Crafts Market can be very entertaining way to spend time. There are hundreds of vendors selling pretty local handmade jewelry and many other local crafts.
The Zambia National Museum, the Kalimba Reptile Park and several shopping centers are all worthwhile ways to take in the atmosphere of this typical African capital.
